ESPN Not ACC owns ACC GOR per this FSU video

Maybe DavidHood® or BrandonRink® can run this premise down ... essentially stating ESPN can let FSU, Clemson and other ACC teams out of ACC if they stay with ESPN (SEC). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQbEmYTv06E

Either way, Clemson is stuck. Terrible deal that Clemson, Florida State and every other major program should NOT have signed.

That is interesting! ESPN owns the GOR and not the ACC?? Hmmmm, may be a way into the SEC.

It just means we have to pay ESPN and not the ACC upon exit. It does not make much difference.

Of course they own the GOR. That's what the ACC gathered up and sold in exchange for annual payments.

And no ESPN isn't going to release Clemson and FSU from it for a of of reasons. They have Clemson and FSU for X dollars now in the ACC. Why pay X + more to get the same 2 schools in a different league? Not to mention starting a cascade of teams that want similar releases, the end of the ACC and thereafter the loss of a lot of sports inventory it is getting on the cheap.

See, I would have thought the schools granted their media rights to the ACC, who then leased them to ESPN.

Agree - I don’t buy for a minute what this guy is saying.

ACC sold its media rights to ESPN. ESPN required the ACC to have a GOR for that duration as they were investing in a joint effort with the ACCN. I 100% agree that the GOR is between each individual University and the Conference. I think this guy is blowing smoke with regard to that and dissolution of the conference is likely the only way out. Even then, you may not owe the conference anything but ESPN could have grounds to possibly suit everybody especially if teams were moving to conferences without ESPN relationship

If we are held hostage til 2036, let’s just cancel football

Jul 29, 2023, 3:03 PM [ in reply to Re: ESPN Not ACC owns ACC GOR per this FSU video ]

Altogether and be done with it until then. Because being starved of the $$ needed to remain competitive is just a slow death. Let’s take a bullet, get it over with fast instead of waiting for the gas chambers. No one wants that. That is a lose/lose situation.

I have to believe ESPN wants competitive, good games for content in order to attract viewers. Right? Well, that cannot happen if you suffocate the ACC from having similar $$ to remain competitive. At least this way they could cherry pick the ACC programs they know will invest in football to win and cast off the weaker ones thereby allowing them to redirect more money for the desired football programs and let the others less desired ones off the hook completely. This is a win/win situation.

A smart business would look at this as an opportunity to maximize their return on investment better. Who wants to see Duke vs Pitt or Wake vs Syracuse? Not many. So free them from the GOR when Clemson and FSU and UNC move over to the SEC. Take the current ACC $$ and give it to the SEC so they don’t have to dilute their per team payouts.

The only thing that has to be addressed is the ACC side of that contract. You handle that by dissolving the conference. But to do that you have to have at least 8 members agree. To do that, you have to have homes somewhere for at least 8 schools to land and get close to what the current GOR deal pays out now (or more). That should be doable. Especially between the B1G, SEC and Big 12.

3 to the B1G (Miami, Virginia or Vtech, NC State or UNC)
3 to the SEC (Clemson, FSU, UNC or NC State)
2 to the Big 12 (Louisville and maybe GTech)

I could see Duke or GTech being of interest to B1G and Big 12 too.

My take is ESPN is paid based on advertising dollars. What brings in more advertisers? Clemson vs. Duke? Clemson vs. Wake? Clemson vs. Ga Tech? Or Clemson vs. UGA, Florida, LSU, Texas and Bama?

I have no idea who owns it.

Doesnt matter... contracts can be made void. It is what it is.

Re: ESPN Not ACC owns ACC GOR per this FSU video

Jul 29, 2023, 4:03 PM

That not correct. The grant of rights is within the conference.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree. ESPN only required it as a condition to the media

Jul 29, 2023, 4:37 PM

Rights deal to start the ACCN. They aren’t owners or party to it.

Re: Agree. ESPN only required it as a condition to the media

Jul 29, 2023, 4:40 PM

If they were, it would probably mean we would be sued twice...ESPN and the teams left in the conf.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I also think it’s funny that this guy says it’s going to happen by

Jul 29, 2023, 4:39 PM [ in reply to Re: ESPN Not ACC owns ACC GOR per this FSU video ]

8/15. If not this year then certainly by next 8/15. Got to make sure he buys himself another year of people following his podcast.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Interesting! That would be awesome!***
