Who's considered the "Father of Coots Baseball Program"?

Jul 12, 2012, 2:40 PM

Article I just saw in The Hilton Head Sun newspaper said Bobby Richardson is.

He coached Coots from 1970-76...taking them to Omaha in '74 (1st time for school)..and to 2nd place finish in '75. Left with 221-92-1 record with 3 NCAA Tournament appearances.

Coach Richardson of course was famous with the Yankees..where he was a 7 time American League All Star, won 5 consecutive Gold Glove awards from '61-'65...and was runner-up to teammate Mickey Mantle for MVP in 1962.

He played in 30 consecutive World Series games from 1960-1964..was MVP in '60...holds the rcord for the most RBI's in one world series game(6, in 1960)..and most RBI's in a World Series (12, in 1960)..and he also set a World Series record for most hits in a World Series with 13 (in 1964 vs. St Louis)..a record that has since been tied, but not beaten.

Mr. Richardson will be in Hilton Head on July 27 at 2 PM to celebrate the grand re-opening of Legends Sports Gallery in Main Street Village. Later, a "Evening with the Yankees'" will be held at Frankie Bones Restaurant with a reception & full dinner for $35. Tickets are limited and for reservations call 843-681-4444.

My respect & kudos go out to Bobby for what he accomplished..and that he was a great ambassador of the game of baseball..both professionally & collegiately.

Go TiGERs!

I think that's right. Raines kept it going for a while then the program fell off for a number of years. Tanner certainly rebuilt it beyond where it ever was before.

Richardson would have been smart to have kept coaching instead of quitting to run for Congress in 1976. That was a truly lousy year for Republicans.

Good for him. I had a lot of good friends in law school who were Tigers. We certainly razzed each other, but it was all in good fun.

It's a tough market out there for young lawyers. When I got out I could easily have practiced with a big Wall Street firm. With the same credentials now I would have been sweating a decent job in S.C. I hope your fellow had a soft landing.
