Where will the daily shooting be located today?

Apr 12, 2023, 9:06 AM

Now, don't get me wrong, I think there probably HAS been an increase in shootings overall. But, the media is fixated on it now, so if a gun is used anywhere in the country, it will be front page news, to the detriment of all else.

Unfortunately, seems to me all this reporting about gun violence, and the urgent "need" for stricter gun control laws is having a very unfortunate unintended consequence. That is, the sprouting of local "militias", which at least to outward appearances, amount to no more than drunk rednecks with a death wish in a lot of cases. A couple of these organized groups were part of the Jan 6th Capitol takeover, if news reports were accurate. Even if you try to leave politics out of it, I don't know how you could see that as anything other than an Insurrection against the government.

I think that is when the press really got on the gun control bandwagon again, which is why I included it in this message about the daily gun related violence. Our church pastor prays every Sunday about "senseless violence", and prays for another great religious revival in our country. Unfortunately, it appears that we are a lot further down the road to "H.ell in a Handbasket" than we are down the road to a religious revival.

I just pray for a drop in what just appears to any rational person as the totally insane random acts of violence, like the Louisville bank shootings of yesterday. Gun Control Advocates feast on that kind of story. They focus on the guns involved. The focus should have been on the mentally unstable person who pulled the trigger on the gun.

The gun culture in this country is such that there will NEVER be gun control laws enacted that will totally remove certain types of guns being legally purchased, nor should there be. But, contrary to a lot of my gun toting contemporaries, I have no problem with waiting periods, or gun registration, or restrictions on purchase based on past behavior. Those things seem to me to be a good, common sense approach to at least cutting down on any kind of "spur of the moment, or revenge" type of scenario. Of course, the Pro-gun lobby will never stand still for any of that, which is one reason they get a bad rap.

Maybe Chris Rock had it right in a comedy bit years ago. He said, make guns cheap. Make bullets cost $5000 apiece. That would certainly put a damper on purchases, for shore.

Gun control and abortion. Two burning questions, neither of which will ever have a definitive answer, because there isn't one.

We need to protect schools now. After that we can #### and moan back and forth about laws that don’t stop criminals.

Always a tough question

Apr 12, 2023, 9:37 AM

And politicians don't want tough answers. They want easy answers. They want to pass a law and then brag about what they did. But it's not that easy with this. Some thoughts:

(1) The problem isn't guns. This country was founded on guns. We've had millions of guns in this country for decades, but the school and workplace shootings are just in the last 30-40 years or so. So something has changed during that time, and it's not guns. They were here before and none of that was happening. There's something else going on.

(2) Pass all the laws you want - mentally unstable people and criminals don't care. There are some that MAY help, and I'm not opposed to many of them, but laws don't PREVENT anything. They only provide a means of prosecuting them AFTER the fact.

(3) There are no easy fixes. There is no fix that any one congressman or president will be able to lay claim to. It's a deep, societal issue that needs a complex, multi-faceted approach. And that's way above my pay-grade.

(4, last) So in the meantime, we need to lock down our schools as much as possible. Schools and other businesses or institutions need to be free to have armed security on site, if they see fit. A little picture of a handgun with a circle and slash through it won't stop a shooter. A good guy in the school or business - that might.

Just my 2 cents. God help us.

If it's not guns, what is it? We are the only developed country that has this many mass shooting. Not even close. What other factor is there besides the availability of guns?

If it IS guns, then why did we not have this problem prior to 1970 or so?

As to what the problems are now? If I knew, I'd be a very wealthy man with a much better job than I have now. Mental health, social media, over-medication (ADHD, etc), violence in media, etc - all those are possibilities. I'm in the wrong field to make that decision. I do think a big part of it is that we've gotten away from Christian principles that life is valuable and people have purpose and meaning. Now, you define who you are. There's no foundation. And if you pick something, and no one validates it, you're mad. If you can't pick something, you feel worthless. Many will shoot that down, but I think there's something to that, too. I wish I knew, though. I hate seeing all the lives lost and the division that the subsequent politics causes. It's all going in the wrong direction.

Locking down schools (secure perimeters, surveillance systems which are integrated into the police communications & monitoring networks, professionally trained and psychologically ‘vetted’ armed security personnel) is one part of the fix.

Decades ago, people in small towns frequently did not lock up the house before going shopping or out to eat. That all changed as society has deteriorated. Households had to make the adjustment for societal degradation; schools need to do the same.

Xxxxxxx

Passing laws which make the gun owners share responsibility for crimes committed by the non-gun owner would be very helpful.

Example: Dad has two legally owned guns. He bears the responsibility to keep these guns under his control at all times; taking a whizz, dropping a deuce, nap time, meal time, gone to the store … either have the guns in his personal possession or have them locked up in a home safe type highly impregnable (and not easily moved) gun ‘cabinet.’

If son or daughter or neighbor steals the gun (because it was not secured by Dad) and commits a crime with the gun, then Dad shares in the criminal responsibility.

Not enough hours in the day to cover Chicago shootings. Maybe they should go elect a defund the police guy as mayor.

Much of the debate is a misnomer. Gun violence and safety…

1

Apr 12, 2023, 10:55 AM

… should not be referred to as gun control but rather be discussed in terms of “capability laws” focused on the human element. Universal background checks, red flag laws, gun security requirements, gun safety training requirements etc. are really about interventions to prevent “people” who may not meet the legal requirements, have the mental health or have the technical knowledge to safely own guns. There was a time when fire arm safety and training was emphasized in public debates.

CDL licenses were created to increase public safety by establishing basic requirements for driving large trucks and commercial vehicles on highways. Most people find these requirements reasonable. Unfortunately some people see the 2A as a basis for ownership of guns (i.e. bear arms) without any or minimal requirements regarding individual human capability to do so safely.

Probably in a poor minority community in a Democrat controlled city. Mass shootings happen in these areas on an almost daily basis but are ignored by the media since they are so common and don't help them push their agenda.
