The moment you knew Dabo was gonna be a great head coach....

16

Aug 24, 2023, 2:15 PM

For me it was when he chewed the Punter Dawson Zimmerman's butt for loafing off the field and made him go back and run off the field. I wasn't thinking we'd win national championships at that point but I was thinking, "yeah!" Things are going to be different now. We played so much more physical the rest of that year. I was glad he got the chance. Anybody remember that? Seems like Zimmerman had a blog or something and had a good sense of humor about it.

When did you know?

I figured he was going to be good based on his recruiting ability and how motivational he can be. Just felt he needed to be the “CEO” and surround him with talented coaches.

When he fired Napier after the 2010 season it showed me he would be able to separate himself from friendships and loyalty and make the tough calls.

In came Chad Morris and off to the races.

This past season kinda has a similar feel with the firing of Streeter and brining in Riley!

South Carolina ain't Alabama, they ain't LSU and they certainly are not Clemson. That's why Carolina is in Chapel Hill, USC is in California and the university in this state always has been and always will be Clemson. It's right here in Clemson, SC. You can print that! Tweet that!!

I agree he can been a bit too loyal, however, that loyalty is part of what attracts the “Clemson” player.

He has a history of waiting too long before switching QB’s, but in the long run it has worked out well based on recent championships.

If he had too quick of a trigger finger it would probably change the culture he has built and the success it has lead to.

I agree he should have made a switch sooner, but I’m not privy to what is going on in the locker room or the practice field.

Ultimately what I feel makes him great is a combination of his loyalty and ability to
“Ultimately” make the tough/correct call.

So the man wins Clemson two NC in in his first 10 years as HC and you want to say his isn’t great because of how our QB situation played out these past two seasons?

So your standard for Great coach is 15-0 every season?

I didn't know that he was going to be as good as he's been, but I was one of the few that wanted Dabo to have a chance at being our next HC the very day he was promoted to interim HC, and I was stating my choice here on T-Net many times. To be honest, I don't think anybody though he would become the HC that he has become, not even Terry Don Phillips had a clue that Dabo was going to be the best HC at Clemson ever!!!!

Tigers one day, but my first notice of him came during the opening game against Bama, in 08, I think. Early in the game, before it became evident, that we were going to get a good whupping, we had a very makeable third down, when one of our wrs moved to soon. We missed the first down, and when the offense was on the sidelines, I noticed one of the assistant coaches all in that wrs ear, and didn't let up for a good while. I remember thinking at least one guy on our sideline has some fire. Didn't know who he was at the time, but it turned out to be Dabo. A few weeks later he was named HC. I never thought he would turn out to be as big of a winner as he has been, but I thought if he can give this team the same fire he has, we might have a pretty good team.

Re: I also remember an interview with one of our players

1

Aug 24, 2023, 5:57 PM

after the beat down we got from Winston and FSU. The player said he, and another player were the last ones in the locker room after the game, and Dabo walked in, sat down with them, and told them; we're going to fix this. We're going to get it right. I believed him, and I've never doubted him since.

For me, it was also LSU--one specific moment immediately following 4th and 16 and the FG. It's at 1:44/1:45 in this video. You could see just how much that game and success at Clemson meant to Dabo.

When he walked around campus mid-week during the setup of homecoming floats, mingled with students, helped build a float, fed the students pizza or doughnuts, and talked with and listened to Clemson students. I knew then he was a CLEMSON man, and understood the Clemson culture. A Clemson gentleman from day one. Dabo is Clemson.

When he picked up the sideline reporter after a game and said something like everybody doubted these guys but they didn’t get down on themselves. They were all in, all orange, all the friggin time!

Another one was when he chewed out the media guy for using the “C’ing” word and banned its use.

For me is when he beat a top 10 Miami team at Miami in OT in 2009. Tommy Bowden would have definitely lost that game. It showed me Dabo had something Tommy didn't, and the players were making plays. They weren't dropping balls and making excuses like they did under Tommy Bowden.

Just kidding.

In all seriousness, my wife and one of her friends went to a Tommy Bowden ladies clinic. When she got back home all she kept talking about was this coach named Dabo and how he was going to be a great head coach one day no matter where he went.

We found out she was pregnant the day Bowden got fired. She was ecstatic when Dabo got the full time gig.

That next May, we went to the prowl n growl and she got Dabo to sign a onesie.

Re: The moment you knew Dabo was gonna be a great head coach....

Honestly I can’t think back to a single moment. My view of Dabo changed each season. 2009 I felt we made the right hire. Took us to the ACCCG in his first full season. Then 2010 I’m like well maybe I jumped the gun.

Then 2011 I was sure we had the right guy. By 2013 I was happy where Dabo had taken us but had disappointment that SC kept beating us,

2014 eased that. Then 2015 happened. That’s when I actually believed we could win a NC after going toe to toe with Bama and should have won.

As Dabo was building an elite program I was standing back in disbelief at the accomplishments we were witnessing.

Didn’t know how it would play out but knew he had “it” and understood “it” his very first game against Ga Tech. When players took to top of hill they locked arms BEHIND the rock…previously Bowden allowed them to be dancing half way down the hill before the cannon. May seem no big deal , but I knew then that attention to detail and discipline were important to him.

The first game he coached as interim coach.

When Bowden was coaching my wife used to tell me what play they were going to run as soon as they lined up. Couldn't tell what was going to happen when Dabo was coaching. Also Dabo's enthusiasm. I don't believe I or anyone else knew how far he was going to go, but we were ALL IN after that game.

There was something about the '14 FSU Post-Game interview...

Aug 25, 2023, 3:32 PM

I'm too dumb about football to say I "knew" a coach was going to be good or bad, but that post game...they were #1 in their house and we lost in OT and you could tell in that post-season that it ate him up. Classy post-game but he knew his team had what it took to beat the #1 team in the country in their house and was frustrated that we didn't. It was just a little different feel than I'm used to seeing. Not excuse making, not whining and not sad or forlorn. He just seemed to know they he had the team to beat them.

It was when Dabo won his 1st ACC Championship. When we beat VT I knew he was a different breed. I didn't know we'd win multiple national championships with him, but I knew he was going to be successful.

I loved it. He seemed like a perfect fit and very ready.
Then proceeding to getting us to a point of not losing games we shouldn't, which we always did at least once a year under Bowden, was the next indicator.
