What were the beginnings of these expansion scenarios?

May 24, 2012, 7:51 PM

When did all of this expansion jazz begin and who initiated the first “contacts” on the subject? Here are some possible starting points:

1. Clemson initiated contact with Big XII.
2. Florida State initiated contact with Big XII.
3. Clemson and Florida State meet and discuss leaving the ACC and whom to contact (SEC or Big XII) and form a contractual pact to join together in this search for escape from the abyss of the ACC's cesspool of an attitude towards football.
4. Big XII contacts Clemson and Florida State to gauge interest in raising the bar on their football program.
5. Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma State approach ACC about joining ACC, but are turned down by the ACC. They then decide to formulate a plan to plan not only to eviscerate the ACC, but to challenge the SEC.
6. Swofford was appointed (anointed) commissioner by Dean and Mike with sworn commitment to protect the Holy Grail of basketball.

Any other possibilities?

I believe it was all message board stuff until the Big 12 and SEC bowl deal. TDP freaked out and holla'd at his boy who is the interim commish for Big 12.

I heard (and I dont know the truth of this) that the ACC didn't want Okie State and Texas Tech but would have listened to a deal with UT, OU, KU and MU.

Sounds plausible for a couple of reasons. Academics? 3 of 4 are AAU schools.

Football powers? UT and OU.

Another basketball school to "keep it real"? KU.

And then you throw in Mootard for their 6 million people.

I heard this from an FSU fan though. I never heard about there being any interest in KU from the ACC when we were worried about getting stuck in the Big Least.

guess is various ADs talked amongst themselves before responding. Probably some chemistry between Clem and FSU, both feeling like fish out of water with 80K plus stadiums in a 40K stadium conference.

will expand east in coming years so WVU has some "local" fellow members (plus the West is not much of an option). Since WVU was blackballed by UNC and several others when attempting ACC invitation, they decide to gain some revenge on Swoffie's minions.

So Oliver Luck, the WVU AD, initiates contact with FSU, Clemson, GT, etc to gauge interest. Since WVU is not an official member of the Big XII, they can talk to Clemson/FSU/others as much as they want without it being "illicit" contact. Luck reports back to the Big XII that he has found several interested, especially if the new ACC contract turns out to be crap (which it did). The SEC-Big XII bowl tie-in last week was the match that lit the gasoline (though I'm sure it didn't surprise the Clemson/FSU folks in the know).

The plan comes together as a Big XII West and Big XII East naturally develops.

That leads to where we stand today.
