What has the FSU defense done to merit such high praise?

Sep 18, 2012, 7:40 AM

I realize FSU completely shut out perennial national powers Myrray State, Savannah State and Wake Forest (a noteworthy acomplishment to be sure), but at the end of the day, isn't this essentially the same defense (minus their best cornerback) that Clemson hung 35 on last year; a Clemson offense that at the time was playing with a questionable offensive line, a first year starting QB, freshman and sophomore receivers, and a rookie offensive coordinator? If not for Boyds fluke turnover to start the second half where Bjoern Werner returned the ball 25 yards for an FSU TD, Clemson probably wins by double digits.

Exactly!! points well taken. I think we will flame the noles.

have every reason to be confident going to Tally. You can be confident and still have appropriate respect for your opponent, however.

To respond to your question, yes the personnel is largely the same. They were fairly young in the secondary last year. So, maybe they're a little more grown up now? Otherwise, they're pretty much the same D we played well against in DV. If we take care of the ball, there's no reason why we can't have success at Doak.

Re: What has the FSU defense done to merit such high praise?

Sep 18, 2012, 8:20 AM

well, they have only allowed 3 points in 3 games against what i would call basically the same talent that we have faced..outscoring them 170-3. I don't care who you play, thats pretty impressive. I'm quite confident that Clemson can change all that because they have not faced an offense anywhere near as good as ours. But lets let them enjoy their #1 ranked Defense....until CLEMSON comes to town!

Auburn was fired up to play us the first game of the season

Sep 18, 2012, 8:38 AM

Now it turns out they're pretty stinky this year, but they would have beaten Wake like a red-headed step child.

basically the same talent that we have faced ?

Sep 18, 2012, 8:41 AM [ in reply to Re: What has the FSU defense done to merit such high praise? ]

According to the most recnt Sagarin SOC rankings, FSU has a SOC ranking of 220 while Clemson's is 130.

Re: basically the same talent that we have faced ?

Sep 18, 2012, 9:28 AM

Saragin is the biggest joke of any rating system out there. All i'm saying is neither of us has played anybody but we have given up a ton of yards and some points and they haven't. I hope we blow the scoreboard up and win by 24 but until we do, they still have a better Defense than us!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

FSU having a better defense than Clemson isn't the argument***

not even close to the same talent faced.

Wake was out gained by Liberty and should have lost that game week one.

I want some of what y'all been smoking. If you watched their defense at all the second half of last year and what they did last Sat against Wake you wouldn't be asking that question.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe its just me.....

Sep 18, 2012, 8:34 AM

but shutting out a team that only managed to score 20 points against Liberty doesn't impress me.

few times. Receivers were open. And on a couple of fourth and ones, Wake through it 40 yards down field to no one in particular. If we can shore up the stretch play, Manuel will NOT beat us in the air. I wouldn't trade Tajh for two of him.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think anyone is worried about the offense...

Sep 18, 2012, 8:21 AM

We just need to have 4 qtrs of defense.

already and gave up a measly FG in one. We'd all be expecting a MNC if our D had performed like that so far. That said, I would argue we've played slightly better competition. I would still have to concede they have shown a lot more on D than we have.

That really doesn't matter, though, because our D doesn't play their D. We match up with them strength vs. strength. We will score on them. They will score on us. It comes down to who gets the stop when they need it and/or turnover margin. If we're +2 it won't matter so much whether we can get a critical stop.

If you look at it that way then what do you say about the Clemson D. from last years OB. Same people minus a few and what have they done that makes you think they are better? When you apply logic, you have to apply it evenly or it is only half right.

Re: What has the FSU defense done to merit such high praise?

Sep 18, 2012, 8:39 AM

We have a whole lot more new starters on D than they have.

Not the same. We're comparing strength to strength

Sep 18, 2012, 8:39 AM [ in reply to Re: What has the FSU defense done to merit such high praise? ]

FSU's strength is their defense. Ours is our Offense. We're all well aware that our D is not on par with theirs but our offense is.

Savannah State 84-0 and then turned around and lost to Arizona by 21. So......wait, I just proved your point.

Maybe FSUs wins aren't that impressive. ;)

I'm certainly not implying.....

Sep 18, 2012, 9:31 AM

that FSU doesn't play quality defense. However, based on all the praise they're getting, you would think they just shut out the Philadelphia Eagles, the San Diego Chargers or the Atlanta Falcons. The FSU defense may turn out to be very good but based on the competition they've faced thus far, I think all of the hype is incredibly premature.

Honestly, I feel like this team is very similar to Auburn...

Sep 18, 2012, 9:17 AM

of 2010. Auburn struggled with a mediocre miss. st. on the road and a 6-7 Clemson team at home before hitting its stride on the way to the NC. Their defense was not what we normally see from the SEC "elite" teams yet they just kept winning. I think this offense could actually be better than Auburns but the defense still needs to improve. By no means am I calling for a NC team, but I do think we will surprise a lot of people this weekend. IMO FSU has two major weeknesses: 1. I am not sold on that offensive line. I think that we will be able to slow down the run against FSU and we have been good on 3rd down this year which will continue against FSU. I also think we will be able to get pressure on EJ in key situations. 2. Because they will not be able to just line up and run the ball they will need to rely on EJ and he makes bad decisions if you get any pressure on him. I see turnovers, if we take advantage of those on offense, we win. CU: 31 - FSU: 27

Re: What has the FSU defense done to merit such high praise?

Sep 18, 2012, 9:22 AM

Before they lost one of their defensive ends to injury, they had six starters on defense who are projected to be drafted. That's a pretty high number.

Say we actually manage to score 35 points again Sat.

Sep 18, 2012, 9:22 AM

Do we win? I'm honestly not sure the answer is yes. Hell, we scored 33 in the OB and everyone knows how that game turned out.
