No way these kids are worth these kind of figures before they've proven anything. This is just dirty. Wonder how many of them are inflating their numbers.

Sorry, it let me read it for free the first time. Some of these kids claim they're offered over $100k, $40k to recruit other kids, etc. They dish on who the cool coaches are, who is arrogant, who they don't like, etc. Dabo is in their twice. Nothing bad about him but they did comment that he isn't changing his ways. Surprisingly a couple agreed with Dabo that once you commit you don't take any other visits. But the crux of the article is how much money these kids can make and they haven't even proven they can play on a college team. It's a mess.

Thats not what that kid said. He said Dabo doesn't want to change. There is a difference between won't and doesnt want to.

I don’t understand what the problem is. If they aren’t worth that much then they wouldn’t be getting the money.
If they are overvalued the market will correct itself. Its that simple.

I have no objection to student-athletes benefitting financially from their names, likenesses, and images. That said, I am also a firm believer that there needs to be some degree of governance and control over both NIL and the transfer portal to minimize if not eliminate the inevitable albeit unintended lawlessness and misconduct that has resulted since the current system has been effectively left unregulated and unsupervised.

I would agree with you on the transfer portal but not the NIL. But no matter what we think, once it goes to a court of law, I think any restrictions that are recommended would be deemed unconstitutional.
I’m surprised the NCAA has gotten away with it for this long.

I think you have missed the point. Most fans have accepted that players deserve to be compensated. OK, some still haven’t seen this light, but I think most people are beyond that. Also, I don’t think most people blame the kids for getting what they can, while they can. The issue that has not been addressed is there are no regulations. Every other professional sport in the world has faced this and addressed it with common rules and practices: contracts, salary caps, transfer rules, etc. What we have now TOTALLY slants the table toward the richer programs with wealthy donors. Buying a 18 year old high school kid is not healthy for anyone. This is not sustainable and must be fixed. Oh, and it will pass the courts as this has already been done over and over in other sports

How do you impose salary caps? Clemson doesn't pay players. If a Clemson player is making X amount pumping a car dealership, how do you regulate that? If the kid finds out (likley through tampering) that he can earn twice as much off NIL from Knoxville, TN, he's likely to go. Tampering is a violation of rules but the player being promised more money isn't likely to report it. Mack Brown (and I think Matt Ruhle) has previously spoken out against teams who are tampering. But Brown has refused to name the schools, at least publicly. Maybe he reported it to the NCCA and nothing happened. Then if this is a problem he's actually concerned about, he should go public.

It is a long way from a free market. None of these schools are going out of business if they fail. You and I will end up footing the bill.

Also, players are not the product. Teams are not the product. The entertainment value of the competition between teams is the product. That is the value that the market will maximize here, whether it works out for the players and schools or not. That is the reason the NFL has salary caps, revenue sharing, and a players' union. CFB needs these things too.

Irmo,

The players ARE the talent (just like in the NFL) - and they deserve their fair share of the billions of dollars that are in college football.

However, the competition is very important like in any capitalistic market. But the market has to be somewhat regulated to foster competition. Even Adam Smith acknowledged this.

This is one of the m ost brilliant things that the NFL has done and it is why they are the most popular spectator sport in America (by far). Through the use of salary caps and schedule parity, they have created a system of open competition where almost every team starts the season with a reasonable hope of making the playoffs.

It would seem that direct pay would allow for some type of salary cap for teams. I don't see how college football can do anything like a draft or schedule parity, but a salary cap would be a good first step in helping to level the playing field among colleges.

It's as simple as supply and demand charts. Any of the charts will explain the concept.

Do you wonder why Hollywood actors get paid more than school teachers? What actor contributes more to society than a good school teacher or college professor? Who gets paid less than a mother? Who is more valuable?

The problem is that it's not really a free market. It's an extracurricular activity operating like a business, but governed like a non profit.

If people are stupid enough to throw away their money, why should I worry about it? Some people and colleges just seem to have money to burn. I think some (most major) colleges these days think they have a blank check like the federal government. Unlike the federal government, the schools print their money by raising ticket and parking, tuition, and booster club fees.

Right! But it really sucks when it's a state funded school. Iptay or not CU is spending money they don't have. Handing out blank checks is going to backfire at some point.

From reading this article, it sounds like the colleges are the pimps who take the money from the collectives and pay the players. Sounds very dirty to me. I don't think the colleges should be involved with paying the players at all. If the player wants money then he and his family should negotiate directly with the collectives or individual businesses.

Everything’s perfect.

Sorry, but I think many will just tune out - the ones that grew up loving college football because it was NOT THE NFL.

Today’s “I want it now” generation is like the Roman populace that just wanted Bread and Circuses. That ended well.

When 6-8 teams are the only ones truly in contention, this will slowly implode.
