What does brownell still need to succeed?

He only has about one more cycle where he will have to start to have to take part of the blame for not having the right guys on the field for his system.
What, in tnets esteemed opinion, does he still need to rack up to have a great defensive performance like this one and still manage to score more than 10 points?

Really?
I haven't been to as many college basketball arenas as I have football stadiums across the country, but littlejohn is a real nice building, the team has a nice weightroom and practice court. I dont know what the locker rooms look like, but I can't imagine they skimped there when they did the re-do 10 years ago.

Clemson isn't going to have the facilities that Duke, Kentucky, UNC, Louisville, Syracuse, UCONN, Indiana, Arizona or UCLA have, but looking at what West Virginia has, I dont see a huge gap.
Tell me what schools you think are comparable. We're talking a school that has no basketball history, and has an apathetic fan base and is a rural campus.
You don't get to build the great facilities until you can learn to win in what you have. Georgia sunk a TON of money into theirs, and that isn't working at all.

of Virginia's new arena. Really nice. Compared to some of the new buildings other schools have, well, it doesn't compare. Our facilities fell behind in football and we finally did something about it. These 17-18 year old kids want to see what kind of facilities you have.

Kids to play at their level when recruited and not let the other team get in their heads and screw them up. pretty simple i think. Can't get recruits for basketball when your losing games.

Purnell vs Brownell
Jan 8, 2013, 8:22 PM
|

Brownell is an obvious downgrade vs Purnell. I know a lot of folks like Brownell and think that he's a better half court coach. The fact is that his teams are getting worse each year. A good fundamentals coach that doesn't get results is only good in little league. Purnell beat Duke by 27 in 09. I guarantee we will never see that by a Brownell team, let alone a big win of any kind by this team.

A lot of people here do not realize how difficult it is to get good basketball players to Clemson.
When was the last time we had a pure shooter?
Ogelsby is the last one I remember. Had he been in a Brownell offense......we would have been ####

Purnell had some good players while he was here, but his one trick pony press for 40 minutes strategy wasn't going to beat good teams very often. The Duke win was the exception, not the rule. And Purnell is hopeless in the big dance. He wasn't getting us anywhere. The fact that he left the talent cupboard bare when he left is indicative of that.

Brownell = GOOD & Purnell = BAD

Purnell recruited athletes who run & gun playground style with absolutely no fundamental basketball skills. He had no true offensive plan & tried to score off a pathetic press that gave the opponent more layups than us. Players were undisciplined & uncoachable...very few got better over a four year period (DB & MJ).
Brownell inherited a mess of a roster from Purnell & will have to spend at least 2 more years handcuffed by the crappy recruiting holes left in the program. Right now, Nnoko is better as a freshman than Bobo as a senior & he's only played 3 years of BB. Right now the new players BB has brought in a much more advanced fundamentally & are actually basketball players in training.
Brownell gets a pass in my book until he gets 2 more classes in that he 'controls'. I just hope the 2 SRs don't corrupt the younger guys into bad habits.

IMO, a first class practice facility along with a players' lounge and weight room, etc. would be a big help in recruiting. Don't know why those things weren't included when the annex was built several years ago. A new arena just ain't gonna happen. LJ itself doesn't seem to be a bad facility and it certainly has ample seating for the typical game attendance. CU's location is not the best for drawing large crowds, especially when most games are televised. So a larger venue is not practical. The associated amenities for the players are what is needed to impress recruits. That's where CU is way behind many of the ACC schools.
