my miraculous extraction from the Vietnam mountainside, I am amazed that I am still able to head out for another day working with school children as it is my 50th year of doing that. Not many folks tolerate working in our school system anywhere near that long. I think it is all about not wanting to waste a single day of a life that should have ended on that day. And I can't wait until that next home game so I can walk among the Homecoming floats one more time in what is truly God's Country.

I have noticed that most times, if I see service medals displayed, and there is a Purple Heart among them, it usually occupies a place of prominence. As does yours, front and center. I can only surmise that Purple Heart recipients value those medals extra highly, as they are a reminder of how close they came to making the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

No idea about his identity - wasn't in any shape to take names and had no way to follow up. I do know the last name of the surgeon who operated on my leg twice before being move out of the field hospital as he also told me the pint of blood that was going into my arm was from him. I couldn't believe that even the doctors had to give blood so the wounded could get it.

Forget Tet and the media destroying public support for you boys over there. You boys in Vietnam were dominant despite being forced to fight a war against an obstinate guerrilla force on their own soil, with at least one hand tied behind your backs at all times. Against a conventional force, with ROE that placed more value on the safety of American troops, that war would have turned out much different.
As a whole, your sacrifices and service were largely ignored upon your return, and for many years thereafter. Your fight didn't end when you were lifted off of that mountain either. You and your brothers in arms are the reason that our nation has the framework that it does for veterans. The legacy of Vietnam Veterans stretches much further than the eventual withdrawal. The value of the work done by Vietnam Veterans to force the nation to respect veterans is immeasurable.
You Vietnam Veterans have so much in common with those that served in Afghanistan for the past two decades, only to watch all of your hard work eliminated in short order after U.S. withdrawal. I am a history major and I often study the parallels between those two campaigns.
I digress, and thank you for your service!
