Marshall/Stanford beat ND at home but

Oct 25, 2022, 10:06 AM

I keep seeing everyone screaming how it’s going to be a “tough” game. This isn’t BK teams that were a tough out, if we can’t put them away then there are some problems. The guys are finally getting some rest and we are entering the home stretch. I fully expect us to come out and blow the doors off of them

Nobody gets pumped when Marshall to comes into town

Oct 25, 2022, 10:09 AM

(1999 anyone?). Everyone gives their best effort against Clemson. It’ll be a tough game.

There's something in these hills.

Re: Nobody gets pumped when Marshall to comes into town

They can give 110% and it shouldn’t be close in anyway. They are a terribly coached football team.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree ... don’t sleep on ND that beat UNC in Chapel Hill

Oct 25, 2022, 12:13 PM [ in reply to Nobody gets pumped when Marshall to comes into town ]

Seeing them go on the road and top that potent UNC offense should give us pause.

I still have every confidence that Clemson is far better team, but ND has some really talented player.

This weekends game at Syracuse will be something to watch and weigh the outcome.

SMH....

Oct 25, 2022, 1:12 PM

we need to stop building an excuse narrative in the event that the Notre Dame game is a close win or a loss.......call it what it is.

Notre Dame is NOT GOOD.

North Carolina beat App State by 2, beat Miami by 3, beat Duke by 3, beat Ga. STATE by 7, & Lost to Notre Dame (who also lost to Marshall, who lost to Bowling green, who lost to Eastern Kentucky).............North Carolina is NOT GOOD either.

If we're a playoff caliber team like most on here think/hope/say we are then we should have no issues beating EITHER team........home/away/neutral......don't care...........we can't be building a case of excuses to justify a Bad team that we're about to play..............dabo can to his team b/c that's what coaches do and have to do, but we have fans don't.

It's ridiculous to debate about Clemson not being respected or ranked high enough while at the same time building a justification on how Notre Dame or Louisville or Miami or South Carolina are tough opponents that could give us a close game.

The only thing they have in their favor is that they have had this game circled since at least January. Like most teams we play, this is their super bowl.

They'll give a "Rudy" like effort against us. Tigers still win.

Night games in South Bend can sometimes be tricky. With that being said, I think our guys will be excited to play in that environment. It's somewhat of a revenge game from 2020 as well. We will win but will probably pull away comfortably late.

Sidenote: I'm interested to see how we defend Michael Mayer. He's the only guy that I can see giving us some trouble.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Do you see DJ regaining his confidence in South Bend

Oct 25, 2022, 10:16 AM

that he didn't have in Death Valley Saturday and eliminating the soul crushing turnovers or do yo see Cade seizing the reins and catapulting us to a scoring extravaganza after going 9 of 19 in limited duty this year?

I don't see the coaches trusting DJ enough to air it out. I think we win, but not "blow the doors off of them."

Re: Do you see DJ regaining his confidence in South Bend

Oct 25, 2022, 10:21 AM

I think the coaches will try to do every they can to put DJ in the same frame of mind he was in last time we played in South Bend. If it doesn’t work out, we have Cade.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They will try.

Oct 25, 2022, 10:27 AM

But, the stands were practically empty when DJ was there last and we lost to a team we beat the crap out of when our starter returned at the end of the year.

If DJ's confidence is shot for a noon game in the valley, it's going to be awfully fragile for a night game in South Bend.

Hopefully, Cade can get a lot of work with the first team over the next two weeks, but it sounds like he may not.

Re: They will try.

Oct 25, 2022, 12:26 PM

I agree about hoping Cade get some work in with the first team. Hope we don't need him, but we need to be prepared.

Hope we are 100% healthy with Fred Davis and Barrett Carter.

Will be interesting to see how ND fares with Syracuse this week. Wonder how many time the Cuse gets called for holding. Wondering if Cuse #23 stomps on hands and walks over guys he tackles.

Re: They will try.

Oct 25, 2022, 12:34 PM [ in reply to They will try. ]

There's plenty to question from DJ after last season and this past week, but I think indicating that we lost to ND in 2020 due to DJ and then beat the crap out of them later in the season with our starting QB is very unfair. We scored 40 points against ND with DJ at QB and he threw for 439 yards. The issue was that we gave up 47 points while missing a ton of defensive players. It's true that we won by 24 the next time we played them, but our defense holding them to only 10 points played an even bigger role in that than having Lawrence back did.

I think so too and a lot of how I feel going in to ND will depend on how that game turns out. The only ND game I have seen this year was the opener against Ocry0 St and they played the bucknuts pretty tough. Did a pretty good job defending their QB.

Re: Marshall/Stanford beat ND at home but

Oct 25, 2022, 10:19 AM

Beating us could be a shot in the arm for their season so I'm sure they will pull out all the stops. We should be ok if we play well. Lot's of turnovers like Sat. could be a problem. I hope the bye week is helpful for us as sometimes you can lose your timing, etc.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-74tiger.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We should win, but home-fields are the great equalizer

Oct 25, 2022, 10:25 AM

Look through all of the top-teams' losses this season. They're basically all on the road (with the exception of Wake's). Overall, talent-wise ND is probably a top-30 type of team, so it will be a test. Again, we should win, but I wouldn't expect it to be easy.

True but they literally lost to Marshall and Stanford at home that’s my entire point lol

Oct 25, 2022, 10:36 AM [ in reply to We should win, but home-fields are the great equalizer ]

If we don’t play well they’re all tough games. Point spreads raise expectations but mean nothing. It’s how we’re coached and our players execute the plays. There are no gimmes.

2024 white level membermilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Notre Dame "SHOULD" be an easy win for Clemson.....

Oct 25, 2022, 10:36 AM

but we also....
should have been up more than 14-3 at half on GT
should have been up more than 13-6 at half on LaTech
should have been up more than 10-3 at half on BC
should have put FSU out of their misery up by 20
should have not turned the ball over vs Cuse and made them look better than they were

Teams that lose to Marshall and Stanford (AT HOME to make matters worse) are NOT GOOD! Clemson is much better and "should" beat them easily if they are the "playoff" type team we hope/want them to be............it's the 9th game of the year coming off of a Bye week, there's no excuse to NOT have a complete and dominant game in South Bend..............we shall see.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well said! And to the guy who TD'd this...

Oct 25, 2022, 11:29 AM

Either come back and offer refutation and a reason why you TD'd the post, or go back to your crib and suck your thumb.

We're going to need four quarters on both sides of the ball. Kudos to the defense last Saturday. They only gave up 14 points, and that was a solid offensive team with a strong QB and a great tailback. We shut them down in the second half. So I give a "well-done" to Goodwin for that performance. Keep it up.

On offense, well... the major, overriding need is clear to me. We have one player who needs to get his #### together and play better. That player has the support of the head coach and the team, so there's no excuse.

Ohio State only beat ND by 11. ND beat #21 UNC. It will be a tough game

We need to play our best football to win.

Notre Dame got beat by Marshall at home!........who lost to Bowling Green...........who got beat by Eastern Kentucky.

see how that works.

Not saying it won't be a tough game (if it is that's on us), but it SHOULDN'T be if we're "the team" we hope/think we are.........Notre Dame is NOT a good team.

Re: Marshall/Stanford beat ND at home but

It's about scheme and "who" we play...not where. ND runs a very similar defensive scheme to Cuse, which as we saw, is all about keeping things in front of them with the passing game. We ran for a bunch of yards, which I assume we will also do against ND.

Frankly, I'm more concerned about our defense's ability to stop the run. I'm hoping it improves once we get healthy after the off week we really missed Trotter.

Screw Calford.

Trotter played Saturday.
Are you talking about Barrett Carter, who did not play Saturday?

Re: Marshall/Stanford beat ND at home but

Clemson has won several games this year by utilizing depth, against lesser opponents (ie FSU and Cuse). If DJ rolls in there and lays a dud(I do not expect this btw) it will be a dangerous game bc ND while not well coached still has depth to match and if they start to feel they can win at home they will play hard. Plus that coach will be looking for his marquee win so they will be motivated.

I would think Dabo is going to preach that it doesn't matter the record they are still Notre Dame and have the talent to beat anyone on any given week.

Truly though I believe DJ has a bounce back game. I'm hoping they get back to what worked for DJ, spread out offense. They went back to the condensed and big sets to take advantage of cuse being undersized and it hurt DJ in the passing game.

We haven't blown the doors off of anyone so no idea why anyone would expect it against ND on the road. Would be thrilled to be proven wrong.
