Waited all day & nobody pointed it out! Tell me I am wrong?

Not one person has mentioned that Putnam wasn't pointing before he snapped the ball today.

I didn't mention it during the game, just in case Michigan was reading Tnet!

But seriously, why did the OL play get so much better? The center wasn't telling the Defense when to engage. Ok, I know not exactly that easy but they looked the best today. The running game was the best, was it Putnam signaling or was it Mafah.

For the life of me, that hand signal has had me questioning the OL all year. Putnam doesnt do it and they play better.

Putnam has issues with player over the top of him. ND caused 2 bad snaps with that lineup. Needs work!

Well, we had a grand total of 285 total yards of offense, so let's not get carried away.

Did you see that Mafah guy today?

The OL played much better. Accept it.

Yeah I did see it. The offensive line was good at times, not as hood at others. Kind if like the whole season. We didn't keep fumbling at the goal line, which made a big difference.

Using your logic, you are happy with the outcome of the rest of the games this season.

Blocking scheme was simplified for the youngins. Looked like more zone blocking and had a TE in line to help keep leverage.

That we did. ND averages giving up roughly 4.3 yards per rushing attempt to p5 teams. That's not good. All you had to do was watch their film and look at the teams who had success. Surprised ND wouldn't be a better run D team.

Keep in mind, most teams use a silent count. They typically have some type of signal, and then the players all count in their heads to whatever the snap count is, and then go. The signal can be a variety of things. Some teams have the quarterback clap. Some teams have the center move his head, or point. Some teams have the guard doing it.

Point is, the defense seeing Putnam point isn't telling the defense when we're snapping the ball. That's because the defense doesn't know the snap count. It's no different than the old days, when the quarterback said hike/hutt/whatever. The defense could hear the quarterback say it. They just didn't know the snap count.

Thank you for finally explaining that to him/her. Can't believe there's been that much banter about it.

I understand that there are signals for the line but the center pointing and then snapping the ball within the next second is not a benefit. The line can watch the ball if they need a signal due to noise or whatever.

Putnam has been pointing then snapping all year. The defense can key in and rush especially the LBs can stunt. Tell me how this helps the OL.

Yes,I have chirped all season because its the worst tell ever. He never changed it up and as soon as he pointed within 1 sec he snapped. Today, he did not point and the OL held their own against probably the second best team we have played. We looked like Pop Warner against Miami and NCST, and guess what, Putnam was pointing pre-snap.

So, while I am sure this isn't 100% the cause, I cannot accept that this wasn't a major problem when we played much better when it didn't happen.

No, that wasn't the problem. Basically every team has the same "tell." Every team has some sort of signal, and then snaps the ball within a second or so.

We will have to agree to disagree on this. I have played football, (not OL), but we never used used the same tell every snap the entire game and from game to game. But it wasnt used today after being used all year minus a few plays and had better results.

Yes, I know it wasn't the only issue but a line that isnt great, why would we give more tells? Wasnt used today and with a broken beat up line we looked better.

Coincidence? I dont know for fact but I have issue with signals that obvious.

Putnam has not snapped the ball well all season. The announcer said it was because ND put a man head up. Do not know but he better get used to it because here it comes.

You can disagree all you want, but you ate simply wrong. Most teams now use a silent count. I don't care what the did when you played st your local high school. Most teams use a silent count, and they all have a signal for it. And yes, they use the same tell every snap.

I agree on hand signal. Stupid move and we never changed up until today. I posted about 4 games back as we use to do this with Streeter a few years back. You nailed it with the engagement comment, they know right along with the OL when to get engaged. Not smart!

As to Putnam, he is either doing a great job or a poor job, but no consistency. When he does a great job, he is a tough hombre and can knock someone off the line of scrimage, but again, it cuts both ways. He is a guard, and we need to use him there.

Great observation and post.
