Transfer portal

Oct 6, 2021, 8:44 AM

I wanted to get the board's thoughts on Dabo's recent comments (and overall opinion) on the transfer portal. I get that he wants to build a program organically, but that's not the landscape of college football anymore. If an NFL team decided they'd only build through the draft they'd never win a championship. I don't think it has to be an all-or-nothing approach but if we have needs and a guy wants to move to a better opportunity why not be available?

I wasn't encouraged after his comments that his stance on the portal has really changed.

Surely he knows Clemson, Air Force, & Army are the only FBS teams that don't/haven't utilized the portal out of 130 FBS teams. Surely he also knows that we've lost 20 players to the portal since 2019 and haven't "replenished" except through Recruiting. That does however allow the staff to use the "we're a young team" excuse to explain some downfalls. Whether Dabo admits it or not he still views portal players as "troubled/character flawed" players that would never "FIT" at Clemson. Hopefully he can eventually get past that train of thought or we will fall behind.

Dabo said this among other things;

“If there’s a strategic need for something, absolutely, because as things change you have to adapt if needed. But you don’t just change to change”.

Also when speaking of the transfer portal he said he’ll always do what’s best for for Clemson.

I don’t understand how people can read what he said and continue to believe that he would never use the portal.

People start with a conclusion and then proceed to read in a way that gets them where they want to go.

First, be weary of the NFL comparison. NFL rosters are a lot more limited. We have played twice as many guys in a game in previous years than the number of guys on the NFL roster. While NFL has scout teams etc, it is a lot more interwoven with a lot less room to develop guys within their "system". NFL players are professional "parts". It is do or you are gone. And NFL teams can't stockpile talent or develop in the same way. There is a big cost/return question there. Next, some historic NFL teams are/were built through the draft and a lot of the free-agent grabbing teams *cough Washington cough* are notoriously bad.

Here is the other thing with Dabo's method. Being an outlier can be an advantage. If you are a 17 year old and considering options and you want to take Clemson, this is your only chance. It is all-in. We are a lot more picky than other programs. Higher standards, etc. We might miss on a few because of that but we also land the TL16s because of that as well. Next, you give a reason for the young guys to develop. Coaches are not just going to plop another guy in your position because he was available in the portal.

Finally, to do the portal correctly, you need to scout the portal. That takes time and resources. How much are you willing to lose in the current recruitment process to do the portal correctly?

Dabo is saying "never say never" which is fine but this season is not the trigger point for re-evaluating the whole culture. Because yes, it will be a major culture shift. Having a hiccup after a historic run isn't time to toss out the culture for 1-2 wins. You don't get culture "back". Go ask Michigan or Miami. When it is gone it is gone for good.

Perhaps you could apply some critical reasoning to your portal question.

1) most players in the portal want immediate playing time
2) many players in the portal would not meet our character standard
3) we sign a ton of 4* & 5* players based on our being different and not bringing in a bunch of misfit toys out of the portal is part of being different

In summary there are very few players in the portal who would meet our standard and also be interested in Clemson so why the constant chatter about the portal when its not really a factor for any of the top teams?
