My personal belief is that just because you can physically do something, doesn't mean you should. I think that leads to a lot of unnecessary injuries over time.

I was heavily into weight lifting years ago. I did not do a lot of weight on squats due to a knee injury while playing high school football, but I did a lot of weight on shoulders, and curls, with regular bicep curls and tricep curls (French curls). With tricep curls I could do a lot of weight. My triceps were massive. Plus I used to do pushups all through the day and tricep pushups on a chair. Well it eventually caught up with me with bursitis on both elbows and an AC Joint problem on my shoulder. A product of over doing something with large amounts of weight.

If he is putting the right nutrients in his body that will help the muscle to heal within 2 or 3 days, he should be fine, but that is an incredible amount of weight for a HS student to be squatting. We won't be seeing to many other HS students squatting that much weight. That's a lot even for big bone muscular athletes to be squatting....

He plays one of the most violent positions in one of the most violent sports. His form looks good and the effort makes it look like he left some in the tank. There’s risk involved with any movement, but the rewards for this one can be a bulletproof back and posterior chain.

I'm 70, and I have a hard time with squatting just my body weight, and I was into body building in my late 20's and early 40's. But if a back injury ever puts you down, the weightlifting lifestyle is over, or it was for me!!!

Big Weight for His Age

If his form is good and he's controlling the weight he should be OK. If he has qualified guidance he's not doing 1 rep max lifts very often and is doing mostly higher rep workouts with much less weight. There are 100's of elite athletes in the Atlanta area that are being trained not to mention the Falcons complex is 30 minutes from Jefferson. My guess is the young man is not going about this without proper direction based on his future earnings potential. Looking forward to his arrival on the field.

Didn't mention using weights! Actually, I do still lift, but for strength maintenance. I'm conservative in my efforts...injury avoidance is Job 1....lifting is #2!
