This ship is getting ready to “SELL” sooner than later

The fiasco over the of the assignment of teams going to BCS bowls combined with the ongoing defection and addition of teams at a staggering pace has brought the (big boy) college football community to the cross roads on the structure of the future alignment of conferences and their component teams. Most informed and intelligent people conclude that the NCAA / BCS system is outdated and feel they are on the verge of an extreme makeover or complete collapse of the NCAA. The assignment of NIU to the Orange Bowl has created great debate on the purpose of the BCS selection process. Is its only requirement is to place the best football teams in the coveted BCS bowl games? If it is, NIU should not been selected to play as BCS participant. But this brings up an interesting conundrum for the BCS system. If you simply place the best teams in this coveted bowl hierarchy, then the non automatic qualifying conference teams have absolutely no chance in hell to gain one of these prestigious spots. I personally feel that the BCS system worked in this case even though NIU is not one of the best teams. Sorry to disagree with you Herbstreit, but you are full of post digested food waste. Now the assignment of several of the high ranking teams does leave much to be desired especially as it concerns LSU. All of these ingredients lead to one simple answer: Four 16 Team Super Conferences and a 16 Team Playoff.
A playoff system with four (16 team members each) super conferences is the answer for the two major problems facing college football. First: getting the best teams to compete for the National Crown and second: creating an indisputably fair 16 team playoff system with the 16 best teams competing for the national championship. This is not a novel idea ( I have posted previously) and I think most logical people see the progression today towards this arrangement as we speak (GT to B1G). The simple and logical structure is simply to have each of the four conferences be quartered into four pods each. At the end of the 12 game season, each of the POD winners faces each other in a two game playoff system to crown the conference champion. The four conference champions now face each other in a two playoff to determine the undisputed National Champion. This system should eliminate the crying and moaning by the “bubble” teams that are not included. You cannot win your four team POD, you should not play for the crown.
If you are not one of the top 64 teams, you should have developed a more competitive and marketable product. Good bye Wake and a host of other teams including NIU.

A 8+ Team Playoff destroys what is special about CFB

that is - emphases on the REGULAR SEASON. NCAA > NFL because you don't have a situation where a team like the Giants can be absolutely terrible to start the year, get hot, and then make the playoffs and win the super bowl.
If you are not good enough to be in the Top 8, then you should have played better during the year (there will not be 8 undefeated teams) or scheduled better OOC opponents. The # 15 team in the country should not get a chance to be a national champion, they blew their chance in the regular season.

1-AA level. Why shouldn't the 15th team have a shot? When you pick and choose the eight best it will be four SEC teams every year.

Major Conference Champions and 3-4 at large teams does not trivialize the regular season and conference championship games.

You are missing my key point on my OP. It essence it is a 16 team play off system, but with the the first TWO ROUNDS being within a super conference's championship structure. In reality it is still just a four game national championship play off and it does NOT diminish the the regular season. If you are in a four team POD, every regular season game has tremendus implication on your standing in the POD.

The NCAA has little or nothing to do with D-1 football-

the conferences control everything in regards to big-time CFB. They do not want to cede control over TV rights (money) back to the NCAA. This was the situation until the early-mid '90s. Since that time, the conferences and broadcasters have been laughing all the way to the bank. The only way to create real change is to get all stakeholders to buy-in by creating incentives for them to change their behavior. The only way i see that happening is for enough fans to stop watching D-1 football, esp. the bowls, so that the broadcasters start losing advertising dollars. Could it happen? Yes. Will it happen and will it result in a playoff system? I don't know.

period. WHy should schools like LSU and CLemson and Oklahoma have to sit out and watch some po-dunk school like Northern Illinois who does not play quality teams play in a BCS bowl game? That makes NO sense. That is akin to liberals ideas of giving hard working peoples money to worthless lazy idiots who do not work.

NIU is there to prevent an antitrust lawsuit

The non-AQ rules were put in to keep Orin Hatch and other Congressmen from flipping their lid when the biggest school in their state isn't in a BCS conference.
NIU isn't the fault of the BCS or the "system." NIU being in the Orange Bowl is the fault of the pollsters who pay little or no attention to the games and only vote based on who won and lost that week without looking for the entire body of work. The computers have them in the 20s. The human polls have become 2 things: 1) an affirmation for the preseason impressions 2) the by-product of "well they won so we have to move them up."
Northern Illinois' signature win was over 1-11 Kansas and an overrated Kent State team. But since they won 12 straight the pollsters kept moving them up.
