If the ACC offered West Virginia today, would they come

and would this blow up the Big 12 deal?
WVU would then keep rivals with PITT Va Tech, Virginia and Maryland. This crushes the Big 12's hopes of screwing the ACC and may derail the Big 12 vs SEC game.
I say make the call to WVU, Offer to pay their expenses and Blow up the Big 12(10-1=Big 9).

Big 12's image without WVU. The Big 12(10) then becomes 9 suddenly with only two real football powers - Texas OU and everybody else. Sounds no better than the ACC to me.
At least it would put us on equal footing with the Big 12.

that is at least comparable to the SEC instead of making the other BCS conferences weaker. College football also needs some of traditional powers to come back strong.

The ACC presidents caused this mess. They are the ones that wouldn't talk w/ WVU.

No, and for many reasons
1. WVU athletic director Oliver Luck already hates the ACC for not letting them in last year.
2. Why leave the BIG XII which seems to be able to pick and choose whatever schools they want to expand now from the ACC and possibly ND.
3. Big XII offers much more money.
4. Not getting WVU into the Big XII would never stop the SEC - Big XII bowl game
5. When they leave, the Big XII can make an entire East division of the conference with their picking from Miami, FSU, Clem, GT Louisville, ND, VT and many other schools.

will watch the conference go down in flames first. WVa would take the invite if they were convinced no one from the ACC was bolting. Oliver Luck isnt planning on sticking around WVa any way ...

if they want to see the conference survive at all, might have agree.
WVU adds some pretty intense rivalries to the conference - WVU vs Pitt,VaTech, Maryland, Virginia. That sort of rivalry is what makes the SEC strong.

1. WVU athletic director Oliver Luck already hates the ACC for not letting them in last year.
This is business, you don't let feelings cloud your judgement.
2. Why leave the BIG XII which seems to be able to pick and choose whatever schools they want to expand now from the ACC and possibly ND.
Big 12 contract I assume is dependent upon them staying at 10 or expanding. WVU leaving would lessen the Big 12's ability to raid the ACC and it would make it less likely ND would join the Big 12.
3. Big XII offers much more money.
doesn't losing WVU change their contract? If not, wouldn't it increase the ACC's contract?
4. Not getting WVU into the Big XII would never stop the SEC - Big XII bowl game -
probably correct, but I think it adds less credibility to it especially if no one defects from the ACC and you have added WVU to the conference. 5. When they leave, the Big XII can make an entire East division of the conference with their picking from Miami, FSU, Clem, GT Louisville, ND, VT and many other schools
If WVU were in the ACC would anybody really need to leave the ACC at that point?
I find it ironic, that the team nobody wanted - WVU - has shifted the entire landscape of college football. More distressing, had Clemson whipped WVU in the orangebowl, I'm not sure any of this would be happening.

Their problem still is that VT, UVA and I'm sure more schools want nothing to do with them.

that is for the lawyers to argue over. If I were ACC commissioner, I would certainly be floating to the presidents. UNC, Duke et al might have to hold their nose on this one if it means saving the ACC.

On top of that the ACC contract is done. We failed miserably and it is not basically written in stone.
The big 12 IMO is the only way to save our football relevance.
I would hate to travel, and I live in Raleigh, so I would miss all the games here. However, I want whats best for Clemson, not myself.

Let the SEC and Big 12(10-1=9) have their bowl
May 23, 2012, 3:13 PM

The Big 10 and Pac 12 have had the rose for years. So what? We get WVU, Cripple the Big 12 (10-1=9)'s expansion dreams and own the east coast where most of the TV sets are located. We can renegotiate our deal because we expanded.

The ACC's own arrogance caused this mess, I would invite politly, with hat in hand ... WVU is a fine school and would certainly help the ACC's Football reputation. Yes, and pay thier exit fees, we are going to lose a LOT more then that if the ACC becomes another version of the A-10.

There is absolutely no chance in hell that WVU would come to the ACC now. Too much has changed since last year. In fact it would be hard to convince me that any school in the so called "Big 4" would take a pay cut and come to the basketball centered, Swofford run ACC. To even suggest it is ridiculous.

Would Big12(10-WVU=9) really be a big 4 at that point.
May 23, 2012, 2:48 PM
|

To think WVU wouldn't jump at a chance to play 4 teams within a stone's thrown - Va Tech, Virginia, Maryland and Pitt - keep their natural rivalries is crazy. I don't care how bad their feelings got hurt, they wanted in the ACC to start with and I think we could lure them away from the Big12(10-WVU-9).

You really think WVU would...
May 23, 2012, 3:12 PM

take roughly a $10M per year loss, (once the new Big XII contract comes out including their new conference championship game, new bowl game with the SEC, and basically a seat at the table for the football National Championship playoff, and ability to keep their 3rd tier TV rights)to come and join the mighty ACC?
You're right, they did want in the ACC. But a WHOLE LOT HAS CHANGED SINCE THEN! They are counting their blessings that they didn't get accepted now.

they would get replaced tomorrow, and all that I described financially would be true for the most part. So they would take a huge monetary hit. The Big XII has teams beating down the door trying to get in right now. Who's been knocking at the ACCs door?
