Places around Clemson today's students will never know about
Jul 27, 2015, 2:33 PM
|
|
What are some iconic places in and around Clemson that students of today will never know about?
I can think of a few: -Pitchers -Rockhoppers (trivia night on Thursdays) -Hardees (the perfect spot to pick up a quick breakfast or box of chicken, even on gamedays) -Tigertails (I never went, but I drove by it a bunch, and used it as a punchline a few times) -Explorers (hottest wings known to man -- I cleared a plate then puked them up on demand one night) -The Astro movie theater -Beezers subs (place an order online from your dorm, pay $1.50, and BOOM, they're delivered...no wonder they went out of business)
What else ya got?

store is the old Pizza Hut.I am not crazy about PH in general but for whatever reason I loved that in the summertime the old PH was always dark and cool and I would stop by on hot summer afternoons to chill out , cool down and eat pizza and have a cold drink. The place was old though lol.Who knows what the dark hid!

In the early 70s the girls would go to Macs Sit in the parking lot to see which jocks were there.

I still stop by Mac's every time I come to Clemson expecting to see him. It makes me sad every time. I'm glad that Pat has done such a great job keeping it like it was over the pat several decades.

Used to do our tailgating at Explorer's....
Jul 27, 2015, 2:45 PM
|
|
I think they would sell their parking spots for the season for something like $500. At the beginning of the semester (when we all had money from working summer break) a bunch of us would pool our money and buy a parking spot. One of my roommates families would buy the spot next to it. We'd pull a truck in one spot and set up the tents and grill and chairs in the other. Lord those were some fun times.
And those wings...my wife (girlfriend at the time)and I went into Explorer's during halftime of one of the games....I ordered I think a dozen of those wings and a pitcher of beer. Well my wife may or may not have been 21 at the time so she couldn't drink, so I polished off a full pitcher of beer and those insanely hot wings. Spent the second half with my belly full and on absolute fire. Never made that mistake again.

I still remember my dad happening to be in the area one day and he and I meeting for lunch between classes at Explorers. I got the wings...and boy did I feel it for the rest of the day. I ordered a medium heat, and I swear the outside of my mouth was on fire the rest of the day. ^_^

BigCU, sounds like we were there at the same time! (story)

I was at Y beach one Saturday afternoon and started flirting with a very attractive blonde gal. We hung out a while and I asked her why I had never seen her before. She said she was just there visiting her brother, so I naturally asked "who's your brother"? She said Danny Triplett and that's when I left!
Lot's of fun was had!!

Hey I'm with you . You must be an old guy , too. I spent my freshman orientation at The Study Hall watching the two topless dancers. I worked a few months making pizzas for Bess at Capri's . I remember a guy named Lou who ran the Esso station . I also remember writing a check to Hardee's for $ 1.79 .

Yes, it was Edgars. I liked it but it wasn't considered "cool" and not many people went there when I was in school. Tiger Town Tavern was the "it" place, but it was so crowded and so loud it was hard to enjoy it there.
Also, we lived in the pre-fabs for two semesters. I wouldn't consider those iconic, but they have a special meaning to me as I spent my freshman year there.

One of my first weekends as a freshman we watched a 250 lb chick try that tree swing and she could not hold on. Rolled all way down the rocky hill and landed on the rocks in the water at the bottom. We were surprised she lived. Circa 1991.

depending upon which day you go. If Game Management sees it or finds out about it, they always cut or shoot it down although I believe the wooden platform is still there.
Of course, the current rope swing is not atached to the original tree which was cut down by Game Management years ago. Other trees have since matured and people have attached new rope swings.

How many of these places bring back memories? (good and bad)
-Dan's Sandwich Shop (was the place to go for a very very long time)
-The Bookstore (Warren "Rat" Ratchford, got in legal trouble there)
-BullWinkles (think 1980's...crappy music downstairs behind Red Carpet Lounge)
-Red Carpet Lounge (where students , locals and bikers mixed...I worked the door there some in 80- 81, my 2nd & 3rd sophomore year)
-StudyHall - (across from TTT )
-Fike "Field House" where the players locker rooms were , when the shortest walk into the stadium was down the hill)
-Bengal Ball concerts complete with Beer Trucks at the Y Beach (separate trucks set up for filling your igloo coolers with draft...oh the humanity!)
-Chanellos Pizza -(I delivered pizza for those guy's during my 1st & 2nd freshman year, man that was some good pizza, and the footlong "versuvian sp?" steak sub put any philly steak sandwich to shame!
-Quarters - stayed in business longerthan I thought it would , but was never a big hit for me.
- Lester's anybody remember this one? he was part of Tiger Town Tavern for ever, then opened this spot. I never got the full story on that.
These are still open in some form but have morphed a good bit
-TTT Biggest change happened to Tiger Town Tavern when the drinking age went from 18 up to 21 in South Caroina. Until that point, it was a beer only bar, and the place was "the place" for underclassmen. On a political note, moving the drinking age for Beer to 21 , created a situation where underclassmen were drinking in much less safe environments (off campus apartments, cars, off campus in general)
-Nick's - always was a odd mix of people there, but in it's day they had killer fried shrooms!
-Sloan Street Tap Room - probably changed less than any place in Clemson. Does Jimmy still take naps behind the bar?
-Esso Club an icon , but also one of the first places that Clemson Cadets could sneak to and purchase brown sacks of beer out of the back, before it became all fancy
- Keg Parties in Johnstone Hall(Tin Cans) - -Pre- Fab housing - some awful looking stuff for married students at the time (I think)
-Steak night tickets at Harcombe dining hall

Steak (and shrimp) nights! Thanks for that memory

I never liked seafood until then but that forced me to like shrimp because the steak was a big tough over- cooked hunk of shoe leather and I had to save my $ for The Bookstore

So true. Steak night at old harcombe. Man that was shoe leather.
Edgar's was great. Dollar long necks. Used to spend halftime and sometimes second halves in their enjoying the cold beer and AC.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned el patron. Was basically built in a multi story house and they let anyone no matter the age drink there. Many great nights there before I was 21. I could get in DT but didn't chance my id often

Been to all of them except Tiger Tails.
Saw Perpetual Groove at Pitchers a couple of times. Great nights!
Saw the Blue Dogs at Exploreres, before a noise complaint got called in. They went down to the Esso Club and played the rest of the night with Jupiter Coyote. Another great night in Tiger Town!

Does anyone remember the name of the pool hall that was around Sikes Hall? I only got to go once in the early fall of 96 then it closed. It was a smaller pool hall but had very nice tables.

Coneross fish camp and a liquor store in Pendelton called Rabbits, I believe, where you could buy booze underage. Also, how about parking at the dykes to make out with your date. I bet that hasn't been done in 25 years....

Mine from the Mid 80's - Chanello's party pizza was the bomb, Genoa Club, Del Taco 25 cent tacos, Awful Waffle at 2:30 am (Waffle King in Pendelton), Bollwinkles Thursday night 35 cent on all can beer and $1.00 buckets of draft, College Station, The Corporation (now TD's), Bojangles (now Subway next to TD's), Mazio's Pizza, Acropolis, TTT with no windows, no pool tables (they were all upstairs), and no liquor, Soap and Suds for beers while you did laudry. It's actually easier to list what is still there. My favorite is the Sloan Street Tap Room. Classic hole in the wall with a mix of locals and students and Jimmy Howard busting balls and telling classic stories. It hasn't changed much at all in 30 years, still the cheapest and coldest beer in town. Nicks is still open on Sloan Street as well. Esso and TTT are about the only others I can think of that were around back then other than Mac's Drive Inn.

I have both experiences and places that mostly involve drinking for some reason
1. Heckling opposing Right Fielders at Clemson Baseball Games while standing behind the Right Field Fence. Drinking from a keg at the same time.
2. Having drinks at a "legal" age at Fins Bar downtown. It was a Jimmy Buffett themed bar. Probably closed down due to a majority of the patrons were not over 21.
3. $1 Corona's during Mexi Monday at the Esso and 75 cent PBR's all the time, any day. This was before liquor and food was served there.
4. Charlie T's on the Lake. Great place to hang out during the summer. Good wings, opened past 2am, and Karaoke.
5. Ordering liquor pitchers at Tiger Town Tavern with mini bottles.
6. Wed night burger night at Explorer's which led to a "gut bomb" in the morning.
In regards to all of the comments about Tiger Tales. If there was Trip Advisor or Yelp back then the commentary would be the following: Very rustic establishment. The free pool and BYOB distracts you from looking at the prego dancer with Coot tats!
Go Tigers!!!!!

Circa 1970. HoJo's at the Jct of Hwy 123 and 93. They had an "all you can eat" fish fry every Tuesday night. They lost money for sure. Crawford's Grocery store just off Hwy 93. God bless Mrs. Crawford. She gave credit to all of the married students every month until our ROTC checks arrived. Littlejohn Apartments just off of Hwy 93. They were torn down many years ago. We did manage to take our 2 young children to show them where we lived. Their comment- "Boy mom and dad, ya'll were poor." Diary Queen on Hwy 93. Great "Dilly Bars."

Great Topic.
I bartended at Quarters. That was not a great job for my GPA.
The servers were known by the color of their dress.

Rockhoppers closed?!

I knew about Beezer's, since I was working there when they shut it down (owner actually didn't tell most of the employees, came back from Christmas break and saw the sign, ran into my former supervisor/manager a week later and he told me the owner closed the business). I also knew about the Astro and the students trying to save it or reopen it and Tiger Tails (was Shanghaied there once and that was all it took to never go back), but I didn't know Rockhoppers closed. I haven't been by there since school. When did that happen?

I worked as a cook at Rockhopper's when I was in school. We had a great team there.

I suppose I'm out of the loop quite a bit. This may have happened a while ago, but this is a sad day for me. Luckily I can simply take a look at the latest rankings for a quick pick me up.

Went with my family to the House of Leung a lot.The Dragon Den started around 74-75 and was just off 123 and Old Greenville Hwy.The food was ok but it was a big deal in the mid 70s here.

When I was a kid, obviously long before the new

West stands were built, one of my favorite memories of Clemson was sliding down the grassy hill that sat between the North stands and the West end zone stands on a piece of cardboard. I realize you were talking about bars/restaurants, (Explorers would be mine) but to me, that's a memory I have always/will always cherished/cherish.

Here is a picture of old Memorial Stadium. I guess this is from the 60s or so but the stadium looked about the same way till the first upper deck was added in 78.

Thanks for finding that picture. It would've been in the lower left hand corner of from that view I believe. I'm not quite that old though....late 80's-early 90's for me.

Tuesday night all you can eat seafood dinners at Howard Johnson's at the Hwy 93 exit off 123. All of the married students went there on Tuesdays. They lost money that night for sure.
Also, Crawford's Grocery in the Littlejohn Apartments. Mrs. Crawford gave monthly credit to thousands of students over the years. She was a kind sole.
Dairy Queen on Hwy 93. Great Dilly Bars.

These are bringing back tons of great memories from my days at Clemson during early 90's Don't forget about:
Frat parties at the Skybox Buying first pack of cigarettes or beer at The Magic Mart The Waffle King after a hard night of drinking. Dance parties and underage drinking at Rumors. Back in early 90's the only Chinese restaurant near campus. Think it was called No. 1 Chinese restaurant.
Man do I miss college. Good times!
