The Dungeon: Clemson Weight Club (Eviction)

Sep 28, 2012, 1:05 PM

For those of you interested, the Clemson Weight Club is being evicted from "The Dungeon" underneath Fike Recreation. They are being displaced off-campus. This eviction came without cause or logical reason. If you are interested in helping this members stay as a part of Clemson please tmail me, or email our president at juliusm@clemson.edu

For those you that don't know what "The Dungeon" is, it is the weight room under Fike's Pool Deck. It has been in use for thousands of students since 1978. Home to numerous state champions and nationally recognized weight lifting students. This year the Club has over 200 students and staff that use the space to train. The space is being turned into a storage closet to store golf carts, lawnmowers and bikes. This occurred when Student Affairs hired a new director of Campus Recreation this summer. The new director does not feel that "any logical person would see a weight room in that space."

They did. The club would have likely hit 3-400 members this year.

Beegshot, the club is fighting with Student Affairs to keep the space theirs. The more people helping in the University will only help the club survive.

Just email our president at juliusm@clemson.edu. He will forward you all of the information and documentation that will help bring you up to speed on the situation. It will allow you to take an outside perspective and perhaps find an avenue where you could be of assistance.

Absolutely ridiculous. Lifted in there for all my years. Did the bench contests, help run it with some buddies, had my name up for a bench record... and now an eviction? Not the path I wish to see. Email sent to president.

Additionally: Rugby, Army ROTC, Air Force ROTC, Clemson Crew and Army Rangers use the space to strength train for their activities.

The club is slightly different then it was 30 years ago. It has better equipment than Fike. 10,000 pounds of iron plates > Fike Recreation. Over 20 specialty bars (Fike has none. Olympic bumper plates (Fike has none). Strongman and conditioning equipment (Fike has none). 2 olympic platforms (fike has none). A glute-ham raise, etc.

Re: Please tell me it isn't well lit with paint on the walls...

Sep 28, 2012, 1:55 PM

The lighting is fine. It could use a paint job. If you email our president, he will send you very detailed information that will help you with your letter. He has put together a timeline that will outline the behavior of campus recreation and student affairs. The outline was created so the "lay" person could easily see the situation.

Loved that place in the early 80's. That was many years ago and when the testosterone was a bit higher. How can we help?

Sep 28, 2012, 2:01 PM

would it be an issue if another area was provided for weight lifting?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hey, we're trying to get mad here. Go away with your logic.

Sep 28, 2012, 2:08 PM [ in reply to so whats wrong with the other weight lifting area ]

Adam,

They are not offering another place for our club to continue operation on campus. This is important for everyone to understand. The university is saying "we have you in our future master plans around 2020." We all know how those future plans work out. The west end zone was suppose to be completed in the mid 2000's. It still isn't finished.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I liked the area because it was private for serious people

Sep 28, 2012, 2:35 PM [ in reply to so whats wrong with the other weight lifting area ]

that wanted to workout. The common weight area was filled with people just laying on equipment and socializing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just sent your pres an email

I was a member of The Dungeon during my time at Clemson. Loved that place. Old school, sweaty, manly stuff went on there, a perfect place. :)

T-Mail me some information if you have any.

Re: The Wrestling and Swim Teams say "good luck with that"***

Sep 28, 2012, 2:24 PM

Although I hate that we lost those two sports:

The wrestling and swim teams were kicked out for title 9 and division 1 constraints on team limits. The weight club is being kicked out of a valued space on campus by almost 2% of the student body for a storage space that includes bikes, golf carts and lawn mowers.

The users of the space love it. And see it as a better standard than the recreational gym in Fike that is a zoo of bicep flexing and socializing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying history

Sep 28, 2012, 2:26 PM

ain't on your side. If someone at Clemson prefers something shiny and new, that's usually what happens. Good luck tho

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Actually

Oct 1, 2012, 1:39 PM [ in reply to Re: The Wrestling and Swim Teams say "good luck with that"*** ]

the swim team was killed because they didn't want to put in a new full size pool. Wrestling has a much more direct linkage to title 9.

In the end it always comes down to money. If budgets were bottomless Clemson would every sport that say Stanford and unc do (read that a whole lot more than we do now) but budgets are like that. I'm not sure where money fits into this discussion but rest assured it is somewhere (even if that means not having anyplace else to put the stuff they want to put there thus saving on building a storage area).

Re: Actually

Oct 1, 2012, 3:35 PM

Budget has been discussed.

The Weight Club is offering to have the space cleaned and staffed through the club's funds.

Although, I see and agree with you point that money is always relevant, it makes no since for them to target the Clemson Weight Club who is using the space per/sqft, more then any other entity on campus.

Campus Recreation doesn't feel that the space is a good representation of Clemson's facility standards. What they don't realize is that for hundreds of students, The Dungeon is a more appropriate standard to train than in Fike. This will always hold true because of the culture, the clubs commitment to having necessary equipment, and the people who give the club such an incredible atmosphere.

Thank you for all of the support! The president is getting many emails!

He has been busy replying to all Dungeon/TigerNet/Rugby/Crew/ROTC Alumni.

He said to keep the emails coming, the situation is really picking up heat.
