Obed and others, car question?

Last Friday my daughter's water pump locked and broke the belt. Took car to Firestone, who just finished replacing the serpentines belt, water pump, and timing belt. They called and said that the car has low compression and won't start, and that the water pump may have damaged the engine. The car was driven about one mile after the pump seized and the belt broke, and the engine ran fine. So it's strange that they're saying otherwise. In the process of getting it towed elsewhere, but ### did they do to the car?

Did it over heat? I am assuming it overheated

Several possibilities but they may not be wrong. However, I would not take my vehicle to Firestone for even an oil change. If it wasn't messed up before it probably is now, they most likely saw an easy opportunity...particularly if your daughter brought it in.

Firestone in Greenville tried to get our office lady to dump $6k into her 2007 Kia Sportage. The only reason she didn't is because she questioned their recommendation for new tires because they had just put them on a year ago.

That's what they are saying, but it didn't overheat.

And they drove it into the bay with no issue. Hoping they just didn't know how to properly time the belt and didn't damage it.

Definitely bad decision on my part, but they were open over the weekend and thought I'd get it fixed sooner than taking it to my mechanic.

If it ran great and now doesn't run, there's one option for it to be the timing belt.....they installed the timing belt tensioner incorrectly and it jumped time. If it's not that, it's an overheat issue.

This is the Subaru, right? Already they have poor head gasket designs...they will absolutely not tolerate an overheat condition.

If they installed it out of time, it never would have run correctly.

The Subaru is parked with no tag for the last few months. My insurance company told me that I could not have 5 cars with tags and only 4 licensed drivers after my son's license was suspended.

The underwriter's reasoning is that if I have that 5th car so that my son can drive it without a license. Despite requiring me to sign agreements on each car that he would not drive it. My agent said it was the dumbest thing he's ever heard of.

pump freeze up. It would be leaking fluid (out of the bearing weep hole...thats what its made for) and overheating for a long time before it ever got to that stage.

Water pump isn’t going to seize an engine.

An improperly installed water pump will lead to a car overheating which will lead to an engine seizing. Code for an overheat should be stored in the car’s ecu. If it’s there, they owe you an engine.

That could be what did it, but it would be odd for it to have run properly...it would have run like crap from the jump.They may not have had the Subaru-specific tool to lock the cams when changing the timing belt and it would be likely out of time. The big question is whether it’s a degree or two and was running rough, or if valve met piston and turned your engine to scrap.

Hmmm, this is interesting in the various possibilities for incompetence. If they're saying it was driven a mile with no water pump, depending on what that mile looked like, that could easily be enough to overheat and warp a cylinder head, killing the compression.

Not sure why they replaced the timing belt, they said that needed to be done along with replacing the water pump.

I'm confused because it drove a mile after the belt broke and the pump seized and did not overheat. Cars don't overheat in a mile of driving. And the engine ran fine when they received the car.

So my hope is that the effed up the timing belt replacement, moving it to a competent mechanic fixes the timing, and no damage was done because they couldn't get it started.

b) I understand better now what you're saying....I was thinking they replaced all that and then drove it a mile themselves and the problems started.

c) Yes, it sounds like they effed up the timing job. It can be a "since you were in there" job on a fwd car with a tight engine compartment, but still only needed if the car was at the mileage interval where it was called for. If the car has never run properly since they did that (which was confusing from your initial post), then absolutely, it's probably mis-timed.

The engine wasn't seized, just the water pump.

I rarely drive the car, so maybe the water pump was failing and the car was running hot (but my daughter reports every dash light). But the engine was running fine when they received the car.

I'd check the timing marks...

on the pulley and crank and see if the maroon who replaced the belt knew that those marks had to align in some manner for the timing to be correct.

You should be able to turn the bolt on the front of the crank to get it to specified position and see if the cam pulley is in the correct place. The service manual should tell you how to do this or you can just lazy out with youtube.

Loss of compression is fairly normal when an engine timing is off. Valves open early and/or late which allows compression to escape the combustion chamber.

Actually, I'd check the oil to see if it is slushy brown or the oil fill cap to see if it is milky for water in the crankcase first, then check the coolant to see if oil has found a way in that system. Then check the timing.

An engine needs, air, fuel, spark (unless it's diesel), compression and timing.
