Great photo! Funny, but I have seen less snakes of any kind this year ..... especially copperheads. I have several acres of woods around me and over the years have removed at least 4 snakes from the house, but have not even seen a blacksnake in the yard or woods this year.

I have 2, 6 footers that move back and forth between my barns. Went to unzip my bimini cover the other night and reached up and got a hand full of black snake. Have been around them all my life and it still startles the sh*t out of me.

When I was a kid we had chickens so we would have fresh eggs. We had 2 rows of boxes where they laid the eggs. I was tall enough to see in the lower boxes but not the higher ones. Reached in and grabbed a snake more than once. Definitely startling.

Sorry to disagree with you. The marking are wrong for the Eastern King Snake. We call them black snakes but the proper name for them is Eastern Rat Snake.

I was gonna say I have seen these called Rat snakes but it is very close to king snake. Definitely not the common Eastern black racer.

King snakes, rat snakes, racers, coachwhips and chicken snakes have similar diets. They all eat other snakes, including their own kind.

That is not entirely accurate, but no problem, we can move on. Rat snakes typically have keeled scales. This is easily visible near the head, as the contrast between smooth and keeled is noticeable, hence my original observation that there was not a great view of the head in the pic. My comment had little to do with head shape, more to do with scale shape, although there is a difference in head shape. Regardless, if we zoom in on the body I don’t see keeled scales. Again, not the best pic for that, but you can still see enough to get a good idea.

Top picture is an Eastern (Black) King Snake. Their coloration and white stripes vary. The OP picture is probably a King Snake but can't be sure by the picture.
2nd picture is an Eastern Black Rat Snake.
Supposedly only the King Snakes kill Copperheads and Rattlers.
Black Snakes do kill mice and rats. So they are still good to have around.

You are correct sir! This is an Eastern Black King Snake. It's the cousin to the Eastern Chain King without the distinct "chain" markings. The only snake you'll see in the south eating poisonous snakes will be a king snake. They are immune to the venom and actively hunt them. They are a great snake to have around. The only exception would be the Scarlet King Snake as they feed primarily on lizards.

I've got a good population on my place in Aiken County that was started by the previous owners. Can't count the times I have moved them out of the driveway, wood pile, house, etc. The ones down there have a faint white marking on their backs but could easily be mistaken for a big black snake. I won't even tell you how big some of them are because you wouldn't believe me. Very seldom do I see another variety of snake. Have never seen a copperhead there in 28 years.

wanted me to kill it. Once I saw it was a black snake, I didn't really chase it all that hard, and let it get away. Now that I see they hunt copperheads, I am even more glad I let that fellow live.

there were 2 really large blacksnakes on the property. One in the barn and the other in a tool shed toward the back of the property. My grandfather always told us not to bother them since they keep the rodents and other snakes out of the barns and gardens.

One thing I have never understood noting I am not a fan of snakes. Some folks celebrate a black or king snake killing a copperhead. But if a person kills a copperhead, its a terrible deed which will upset the ecological balance of nature. Not sure how they reconcile the two positions.

Copperheads are poisonous and very aggresive. Saw my grandfather get hit by one when we were fishing a river bank but thankfully he had on thick farmer jeans and it didn't penetrate. If I was leading the way it would been bad because I had on shorts.

Definitely copperhead. They are lot fatter than water snakes and I am not talking about moccasins. But you can see it's fangs if you zoom the pic in, definite copperhead.

That's for sure a King, you can tell from the shape of its head. Eastern kings, can have a very similar appearance to a juvenile black snake, but the head is a definite giveaway. Blacks have a more oblong head shape, while the King's is a smooth transition from body to head. Nevertheless, that is an excellent picture. You gotta love a king snake.
