Team Rankings

Oct 1, 2013, 12:03 AM

To try and compare teams across multiple conferences with differing opponents, we developed a mathematical system to rank every team based on three main factors: level of opponent, margin of victory, & location. It doesn't worry about polls, players, or coaches - only on the field results.

Now, with five weeks and a minimum of four games each, we're comfortable rolling out the 2013 rankings.

As always, please let me know your thoughts - and any ways you could see to improve the rankings.

And more importantly, Go Tigers!

There's a major problem.

With the way you have it set up, at least the way you explained it, you actually GAIN points for losing at home. Dividing a number by a number less than 1 increases its value instead of decreasing it.

Yes - the reason/science behind the 0.9/1.1 home/away multiplier is that historically home teams win approx 10% more games than road teams, so we wanted to somewhat penalize a home team & reward for the road team by modifying their averages by that amount.

You do not understand

Take a calculator. Any calculator will do. Now divide any real number by 0.9. You will notice that the result is larger than the said real number. According to your explanation, you divide by 0.9 for a loss. That is an increase in points for losing. I am aware that you are also calculating in another factor by deducting points for the loss, but it seems odd that you are then increasing the number.

But it is a negative number so the negative number is what is increasing, thus increasing the penalty...

This is pretty good

No computer or strictly stat based comparison will be perfect but I have no argument for most of the ratings.
