Taking my boys to Boston Thurs-Sun advice needed

Sep 23, 2012, 4:34 PM

The wife and I went several years ago but that was a grown-up trip. I.e. Sam Adams brewery, cheers bar(s), etc. this time with 2 boys under 12 I was looking for suggestions beyond the Freedom Trail stuff we'll be doing. Thought Duck boats too.

Restaurants?

If you are interested in going to a game you can get tickets dirt cheap. People are basically giving them away at this point.

Boston Suggestions

Salem Mass (Home of the infamous Witch Trials), is only a short train ride from the North Station (20 minutes), 6 bucks a piece! (cheap) .... Salem takes Halloween very seriously, and they are already ramping up! My kids loved it...

Restaurants? I suggest this one.... right on the Freedom Trail ....

1) Use the T, don't drive. Get a pass up to two kids are free and it goes everywhere including the game.
2) Fenway, and ducks are great idea, T pass also gets ferries.
3) We did a ghost walk on Halloween, she loved it.
4) Freedom trail and graveyards are great.
5) We stayed at MIT and there is a little pizza place there, Emma's, I think. it is great.

We had a great time but it was cold. You should have great weather.

Do you think they'd like a whale watching tour? There's several local areas that offer those. Another place I enjoyed visiting (even as a kid) was Plimouth Plantation (in Plymouth south of Boston). They have reenactors that speak in the dialect spoken by the pilgrims and won't acknowledge anything that has happened since the 1620's. In other words, if they ask you where you're from and you say South Carolina, they will tell you they don't know where that is. Or they may comment about your strange clothing...when you arrived in the colony, etc. There's also a replica of the Mayflower in town that you can tour, great seafood restaurants, and Charleston-like ghost tours.

I lived in New England for 15 years. If you have a car and an interest in history, take the boys down to Plymouth. Tour the Mayflower II and Plymouth Plantation; the reenactors at both are really good. If time allows, you might want to go whale watching on Capt John's boat, but it might be late in the year.

Lexington and Concord are good visits. Your sons will learn that Paul Revere didn't finish his ride, but two others did. Take the boys to Old Ironsides in the Boston Harbor if you are stuck in the city.

Museum of Science, Minuteman National Park (Concord)

Minuteman National Park is really cool if you like history; the Old North Bridge is there and Miriams Corner (just down the road) is where the "Shot Heard 'Round the World" was fired - it's truly the site where the Revolution began.
If you rent a car you could be on the Cape in 90 minutes; that's a neat little excursion.
