Syracuse is where the Tigers show us

Oct 16, 2022, 8:49 AM

what theyve got because on paper, Cuse can and will go toe-to-toe on both sides of the ball.

According to the latest FBS categorical rankings --

Tigers Total O: 55th (425 yds/game)
Cuse Total O: 40th (441 yds/game)

Tigers Total D: 23rd (318 yds allowed/game)
Cuse Total D: 10th (272 yds allowed/game)

Tigers Rushing O: 54th (174 yds/game)
Cuse Rushing D: 16th (95 yds allowed/game)

Tigers Passing O: 58th (255 yds/gm)
Cuse Passing D: 17th (177 yds allowed/gm)

The Tigers are 2nd in the FBS on run defense (62 yds allowed/game) while Cuse runs it well (190 yds/game for 36th best in FBS).

The Tigers are 94th in Passing D (256 yds allowed/game) while Cuse gets 251 yds/game thru the air - 61st in the FBS.

If ever home field mattered, it's this Saturday in DV.

May want to check to see who Syracuse has played.

I take your point but it's hard to ignore these numbers.

Like I said, this is where the Tigers can show the world what they're about. If Cuse is a pretender, and Clemson is legit because they've played a harder sked to this point, then Clemson'll put them in their place.

P.S.: It's also a tired bit, throwing (insert opponent name) under the bus for not having played a tougher schedule. Everyone howls when Clemson gets thrown under the bus for not having played a tougher schedule.

Agree. The only team they've played this year is NC State,

and had two weeks to prepare.

Well, looking at common opponents

Oct 16, 2022, 11:57 AM [ in reply to Re: Syracuse is where the Tigers show us ]

We beat NC State 30-20, and Syracuse beat them 24-9.

Their win is more impressive than ours.

Their win was without O’Leary

Given Leary's absence it's hard to make that case. But, a good defense against a backup QB does exactly what Cuse's D did in holding the woofs to 255 yards and three field goals.

My family gets one in-person game a year. We picked the Syracuse game and we're glad we did as it turns out.

I'll take Cuse and the 14.

Oct 16, 2022, 9:00 AM

Dabo does not blow out people this time of the year. If he puts our guys offense on the field and allow them to run only what plays they've mastered we would blow Cuse off the field but our guys would not be working on the portion of the playbook which needs the most attention. IDK why everyone doesn't get this. When you learned to type you quit practicing, you just typed. It's that freaking simple.

OSU and Michigan are scheduled, one of them will lose. Same with TN and UGA, one of them will lose. If it's TN which loses then Bama gets to play UGA. One of them will lose. If Bama wins they are not going to select two, one loss, SEC teams for the playoff over an undefeated Clemson team. They'd bump any other one loss team if they did that. It doesn't look like anyone but OSU, TN or UGA, and Clemson is a lock right now according to which of those go undefeated.

I'd take a one point win in every game remaining on our schedule.

Has Dabo ever publicly said he does this, that this is his strategy? I'm not coming at you, personally, but do wonder where this comes from. Because it seems elaborate and risky, bringing a practice mentality to an actual game.

But if you're right, and they do this, they'll have a tough day Saturday. I'd just prefer they play to win.

Re: I'll take Cuse and the 14.

It's just made up. Dabo sure didn't mind scoring late against Boaton College last week. Back in the South Carolina in 18, he scored with less than a minute in the game. Beat Louisville 77-16 that same year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I'll take Cuse and the 14.

Oct 17, 2022, 4:59 PM [ in reply to Re: I'll take Cuse and the 14. ]

Dabo has publicly stated that our offense's opening quarter is largely scripted out ahead of time, with adjustments made on specifics depending on the situation. Up to the first 20 plays or so. With football being such a long game, Dabo has made it a point to test a number of plays and formations and work those into the remainder of play calls from there. Three and a half hours later, we are on top far more often than not under his leadership, so that has shown itself to be a winning strategy.

I would think that same approach would apply to how he treats seasons also. We seem to start seasons a little slower and build and build from there, letting an offense and its many components establish a rhythm and build confidence without overtaxing their playbook knowledge. Heavy player rotations, including tight situations, is another clear signal of that long view.

Uh, disagree. This team has already shown us who they are. I know everyone has a love fest with the $EC, but the teams in our division this year are MUCH better as a group than they have been in the past and we’ve won every one of those games so far.

I expect most of our games to be tough the remainder of the year. Will we make the playoffs? I guess we’ll see. BUT I know one thing, this team is way better than it was last year.

Cuse has been chowing on powder puff teams and is completely reliant on that high school gym they call a dome making it difficult for teams accustomed to decent venues. On the road they will be much less impressive.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Syracuse is where the Tigers show us

Oct 16, 2022, 1:10 PM

Absolutely. Cuse has just padded their stats against weak sisters like Purdue (5-2; second in B10 East) and a slough of ACC powder puffs. But wait, since the ACC is as big a big-timin' conference as all the others in keeping with the TNET narrative, there ARE NO powder puffs in the ACC!

Meanwhile, Clemson's had to slug it out against nightmare matchups like Furman, LaTetch ...

Those pesky stats. They just don't usually lie this late in the season.

You said this verbatim when we came to DV in 2018 and won in the last second. I can go pull up your post. I expect yall to win big, but this aint 2010 Cuse coming down there. And I know you know that.

Good to hear from you CuseJuice! I agree and got a better team now. Congrats on being Bowl eligible which I'm sure is your main goal as a program right now. Hope for a good game, players staying healthy, and Tigers win!

What is the story on Syracuse Basketball and when Boheim is going to ride into the sunset? Can't believe I see some preseason rankings of them in top half of the ACC. Very young at key positions and not much depth. What do you think of Clemson under Coach Brownell? Think both programs could be at crossroads for each of their levels?

Re: Syracuse is where the Tigers show us

I just have a feeling we dominate this game. At home in the Valley where we seldom lose and haven't lost in a very long time. Coming off a disappointing finish to a game against FSU, I have a sense the coaches will want to put an emphasis on finishing this game. Look for the defense to play one of their better games against Cuse. Did I mention it is being played at Death Valley? My only cause for concern is that it is a Dino Baber's Syracuse team. They play us tough and always want to prove something against us.

Has any team gotten in DJ's head this year? I think not and I don't see Syracuse being the first. In the Dome, maybe but not in the great outdoors. Clemson will win comfortably but Sean Tucker will put up some stats...

Total Offense is the area where we really got spoiled under

Oct 17, 2022, 6:11 PM

Watson and Lawrence. We NEVER got "outyarded" back then. Or at least it seemed we didn't. And, in those days, 500 yards of total offense for the Tigers was an OFF day.

:)
