Sunday sermon: Change is gonna come

Nov 27, 2011, 12:52 PM

Today's reading comes from the Gospel, according to Sam Cooke:

"Was a time that I thought Lord, this couldn't last so very long.
It's been a long, long time comin',
But I know, I know a change gotta come.

"It's been so long, a little too long
But a change has gotta come."

When my little girl was barely old enough to walk, I put a rubber, toy squeeky chicken in her hand.

"This," I told her, "is a Gamecock. See how soft and squishy it is? You aren't afraid of a Gamecock are you?"

"No daddy," she replied with a little-girl smile. "I'll never be afraid of a Gamecock."

Well, look at us now. Absolutely whipped by a bunch of soft squeeky toys. Three years in a row. God, I prayed my child would never see such a thing.

As a Son of Clemson, I'm grabbing my pitchfork, drawing a line in the sod and saying "Enough!"

We're mad. Mad as fans, mad as players, mad as two generations of Tigers who never went through school without at least ONE WIN over those clucking capons.

But before trading shouts of "Hosannah!" for "Give us Barabbas!" there's one crucial point to be made:

The season isn't over yet.

You may feel like it is, you may even wish that this 9-3 abomination was behind us. You may have been so thoroughly disgusted with the past two weeks that you've taken down your flags, boxed up your orange T-shirts and wondered what on Earth posessed you to pay inflated prices for ACC CG tickets.

Now you feel let down? Want to whine and mope and complain?

Screw that!

Our guys are still out there, and if ever they needed the collective heart and voice of the Sons of Clemson, now is the time. The world says we're weak. The world says our fans are ready to give up on our Tigers.

Are you? Are you really throwing in the towel and walking away? If so, just keep on walking.

I don't know about you, but I'm not going to go quietly.
If I have to stand alone like John the Baptist, hollering until they lop my head off, so be it.

I am a Son of Clemson. I'm not going to lay down and let the football world heap shovels of "Same Old Tigers" on my grave.

If it takes every last ounce of voice and hope and heart from my worn and weary carcass, we're going to be in Charlotte, and we need to be balls to the wall crazy for this team.

I'm calling it here and now ... the last Gee-Haw'd!!, the one that puts all ghosts to rest. I need 10,000 brave, crazed souls who have the heart and stomach for this one more time to join me.

No fear, no foreboding. No worries about "what if..." THERE IS NO WHAT IF. There is only Clemson, only the brave sons of the soil who put their body and blood on the line. If you aren't willing to offer up your heart and voice, there is no need to sign up.

Next Saturday, under the national spotlight, the Hokies are coming. They, the media, #### the whole world are expecting a coronation, not a game. There's no good reason, given the past month, for anyone to believe that our Tigers have a chance.

In other words, we've got them right where we want them.

We started this season with the dream of shocking the world. I propose we finish what we started.

For one game, abandon everything that holds you back. Leave your fear of what other people think behind. Bring your anger from last night and hone it into a fine blade. Scream until you taste blood, wash it out and scream some more.

Are we crazy to believe? Maybe...but sanity isn't a salient point around here anyway. Call forth the 10,000 and prepare to put a generation of ACC frustration to rest. Tell everyone coming to join the Gee-Haw'd.

We've been waiting a long time for this. Change is gonna come.

And with the crazed roar of the Sons of Clemson, it comes on Saturday night in Charlotte. We set the world right once again.

Gee-Haw'd!!
