Steve Spurrier has to be the biggest idiot in coaching

Aug 5, 2012, 12:54 PM

Does a PSA against underage drinking.

Instead of suspending a QB that wasn't going to play anyway he says: “You want him suspended for having a beer and he's underage?” “How many football players would be playing if they had a beer and were underage?”

The only explanation is that he doesn't want to set a precedent.

Or didn't want to change the one he already set with Garcia.

The only way spurrier is the biggest idiot in coaching is if hatfield and steele are not around any more...but he is in the top 3

Disagree

Ken Hatfield was not a good coach, but off the field he set a good example for personal integrity. I don't think anyone can say the same thing for Spurrier.

Here is the write up about what Spurrier said on Sports Talk.

Spurrier also talked about the arrest of reserve quarterback Tanner McEvoy in Charlotte over the weekend.

“What happened is Tanner got a speeding ticket and the guy said have you had a beer and he said yes sir, I had one maybe two I’m not sure, but he was not over the limit. It was not a DUI.”

Spurrier said he was unaware of the North Carolina law that states no one under the age of 21 is allowed to drive after consuming any amount of alcohol.

“I learned that today. I didn’t know. So Tanner was guilty of speeding and he was guilty of that [drinking a beer] too. That could probably happen to 50 percent of every college football player in the country if they’ve had one beer and driven. I don’t recommend having too many obviously. But, yeah, he’ll just have to pay the consequences for being arrested.

As for just how severe those consequences will be, Spurrier said that will be newly minted Gamecock athletic director Ray Tanner’s call.

“He’s suspended for a while, meets with the athletic director. It will be Tanner vs Tanner in the meeting. Coach Tanner and Tanner McEvoy. So when the Tanners get through talking we will find out what the punishment is.”

it's ridiculous how esecpn still throws love fests for him, while he has been running a rogue program with players getting arrested left and right.

the rest of the SC media going to start taking Spurrier to task about the message he's sending to the youth of this state???? And make no mistake, Spurrier's comments are in direct refutation of many, many studies about underage drinking.

Because Spurrier occupies a position of influence and recognizability in this state, these cowards fear the backlash of doing the right thing by calling him out about this issue. You can bet Kornblut, Bobby Hartin and all the Columbia radio stooges will remain silent also. Apparently offending Stevie is a much worse sin than sending a message to South Carolina that underage drinking is no big deal.

Teenage Drinking Dangers

The drinking of alcohol at an early age can accelerate the development of alcoholism and increase the risks of severe health problems that might affect people early in adulthood. Teens who drink also face immediate consequences that can be dangerous and fatal. Even teens who avoid drinking alcohol can be at risk for serious injury or trauma when they are around people who are drinking.
Brain Development

Alcohol may cause severe damage to the developing brains of teens. It may explain why drinking at an early age can increase the risk of alcohol dependence. A national survey of 43,093 adults found that people who started drinking before age 14 later became dependent on alcohol at some time, as opposed to only nine percent of those who did not start drinking until age 21, it was reported in the July 2006 issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.

Early Liver Damage

Adolescents who drink alcohol have been shown to have elevated liver enzymes, suggesting a degree of liver damage, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism reports. Drinking alcohol at an early age can increase the risk of liver disease and other life-threatening illnesses such as heart disease and cancer.
Body Deterioration

Drinking alcohol in the teen years may interfere with normal development of the body. It can upset normal hormonal balance that is necessary for developing organs, muscles and bones. Drinking alcohol during puberty also has adverse effects on the maturing of the reproductive system.
Loss of Self-Control

Drinking alcohol can lower a person's inhibitions, and this is particularly true in the teen years. Drinking during this period can cause risky behaviors such as unprotected sex, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration points out. The loss of self-control also leads to teens drinking and driving. A 2003 study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that 31 percent of drivers age 15 to 20 who died in traffic accidents had been drinking alcohol, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
Alcohol Poisoning

Binge drinking is a serious problem for many youths. It is heavy consumption of alcohol over a short period of time, such as having five or more drinks on one occasion. It may lead to life-threatening alcohol poisoning, which can cause irregular breathing, unconsciousness, seizures and impaired gag reflex that can cause people to choke to death on their own vomit. A 2002 report by SAMHSA revealed that 35 percent of people with alcohol problems developed symptoms such as binge drinking by age 19

Possibly Spurrier was simply stating the truth. This country came out The Great War, The Great Despression and World War II with 18 year olds able to drink beer legally.

Are all of you staunch invidualist CEOs from Clemson here to defend the Federal nanny state arm-twisting that lead to the national Prohibition for 18 year-olds?

If everyone one here that drank beer between 18 and 21 were to stop posting, you could hear the crickets chirping on this board.

Same thing for everyone here that smoked marijuana in college.

Most of advanced civilization have learned and moved forward led by science and progressive thinking. Its good to know the cretins at usuck still support a coach who disregards the facts about underage drinking.

I did things as a teenager that as an adult I would not condone my children doing when they were teenagers. As an adult and a parent, it was my responsibility to hold them accountable even for things I may have done myself. It is in part what you have learned from mistakes in your youth that make you an adult, and Spurrier appears no further along in his morale development than most adolescents. The problem with that is that he is an authority figure.

And if you don't think so you should become a USuC fan.
I could list a 100 ways we are better but my point was that while our coach penalizes one of our best players 2 games for things "a lot of college kids do", Spurrier does nothing and even appears to condone it. I'd call that a huge difference.
