There's actually a wiki page that give some insight. Apparently Cumberland wasn't supposed to have a football team after the previous season but John Heisman wanted them to uphold their agreement to play or pay GT. So the student manager of the team took 15 of his frat friends to go play the game. Here's the link, kind of interesting and would recommend taking a look:
