SEC Expansion

Can anyone explain to me how the SEC gains anything if the they invite any North Carolina or Virginia school to the conferance while allowing the Big 12 into the same area. Doesnt that negate any footprint gain by sharing the revenue pie of tv sets and eyeballs with the Big 12?

Not really, because the cable and satellite providers are the ones paying the additional money; the money is based on subscribers in a given area/market...
Technically it doesn't matter if you watch TVLand all day on Saturday, you're still counted as a subscriber when the networks make the deals with DirecTV, Dish, Comcast, Time Warner, and the rest.

they (sec) already has the sc and florida and georgia markets and need new ones that will pay them a ton of money when they start the sec network soon. the sec does not care about what type athletic program a new school will bring only tv markets for $$$$$.

I understand that. But it opens the door for the BIG 12 to attract the same deal or to share the same deal with the SEC in an area like South Carolina ?

that they are worth the money and will attract new subscribers to the providers. That's why Viacom and Fox always block their channels every few years when the contracts expire with the providers, it helps them leverage the new contract by making end users call their provider and complain or sometimes switch to another service.
The Big 12 network would have to prove that it could attract as many new subscribers in the Southeast as the SEC network could in order to negotiate a similar deal.

To OP,
There are a couple of layers to your question and the answers, but I'll try to keep it brief.
The SEC's footprint is the southeast and into the midwest now. They want new states b/c that enables them to increase geo-market share (whether teams are tuning into the games or not). Adding a team from a new state with 9+ milliion like VA and/or NC will give them an even stronger position when talking with media providers (Cable, Satellite, Network, etc....)
They could try to lock down the SE, pick up Clemson and FSU, but that would mean the ACC is falling apart and the Big12 and/or Big10 would then just go after the NC/VA schools, and increase their own geo-market share.
Bluntly, IF teams start leaving the ACC and the SEC doesn't pickup teams in new states, other conferences will and those other conferences will increase their geo presence and bargaining power. This is about lateral expansion more than building depth and quality.

i agree with all that is said about tv markets and it makes sence $$$. also try to remember as a clemson fan we do feel like an sec team but we have one 1 conference championship since 1991. we havent quite dominated the lowly acc. remember we were 6-7 just 2 years ago. the acc as we now know it will be gone in 2-3 years from now. lastly, the acc is 2-13 as a league in bcs games. imo we are in serious trouble if we dont get invited or turn down an offer to the big 12. i see no way we get invited to any of the other 3 soon to be super conferences.
