Ron Morris was not off-base on his Penn State analogy. The NCAA

Oct 1, 2012, 9:19 PM

Should investigate to see if Tanner (by the way I used to like the guy but he has proven himself to be gutless) Pastides or any other USuC official contacted the Drate or the TV station that fired Morris. This is lack of institutional control and exactly what led to the fact that Penn State was willing to sweep anything under the rug for their coach.

Stevie's reaction shows there is a little to much truth to the "too much power" argument

If you were to look back at all my previous posts

Oct 1, 2012, 9:41 PM

explaining why Penn St should be held accountable for what happened, you'll see I basically stated what Morris was talking about. Penn St had created an environment where JoePa and the football program had absolute authority over the university and no one could question it. Now I can totally understand that nobody saw the Sandusky thing coming, but the fact is anyone with common sense knew nothing like that could end good.

Now some of the stuff people around here may have heard of but most of what went on under JoePa's watch was kept under wraps nationally and the only people really privy to things were people around Happy Valley. Much like a lot of the stuff Spurrier has been doing is only known about around these parts. If So Car continues to allow Spurrier to do what he pleases and doesn't question him, they'll be the ones taken advantage of and their relationship with Spurrier won't end well.

Re: I read the Paterno bio recently

Oct 1, 2012, 9:47 PM

it never really touches that Joe knew stuff about Sandusky but it is very clear what a do your best guy he was. go above and beyond is what he taught. so why did he dump it on the AD and never follow up? The book also says Joe and Jerry did not like each other or get along at all which was a bit of a surprise.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-74tiger.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's pathetic

Oct 1, 2012, 10:14 PM [ in reply to If you were to look back at all my previous posts ]

Penn State involved child rape and molestation over many years- with possible coaches- and various athletic officials knowing about it - and ignoring it.

You may hate Steve Spurrier's guts - but comparing that situation to anyhting at South Carolina is classless and stupid.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: That's pathetic

Oct 1, 2012, 11:48 PM

not really. noone accused usuc of molestation. just lack of guts and institutional control that will come back to bite them...youll see

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's none of what you said

Oct 2, 2012, 12:16 AM [ in reply to That's pathetic ]

Like I said, what happened with Sandusky was the extreme that nobody saw coming and even in a culture like that would most likely never happen again. The point of the comparison is that when you start giving too much power to the football coach and program over the university it creates a poor culture for the school and bad things can happen from it. Let your football coach do what he wants and you'll suffer the consequences.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Basicically "absolute power corrupts absolutely:....

Oct 2, 2012, 6:15 AM

...or something similar to that. The USC admin and all their fans feel they're on the verge of great things in the FB football program and nothing is going to get in the way of that. Especially not a two-bit (in their eyes) reporter who won't kiss Spurrier's red behind.

He was way off base - even Greg Doyle admitted that much

Oct 1, 2012, 10:16 PM

All Tanner did was stand up for his football coach- which he felt was deserved.

What are you talking about "that fired Morris?"

What "lack of institutional control" are you referring to in this matter?

coupled with the fact the usuck "compliance dept"

Oct 2, 2012, 12:55 AM

immediately signed off on those NCAA violations rather than first checking with the NCAA to make sure everything was above board. If thats not classic "lack of institutional control", I'm not sure what is.

Of course, we wouldn't want to infer that the football program has exerted enough pressure on the usuck ath dept to give Spurrier's thugs "carte blanche" or anything like that

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It wasn't a "lack" of institutional control that doomed PSU,

Oct 1, 2012, 10:31 PM

it was the abuse of institutional control that brought them down. That was the comparison that Morris was making, where institutions, its caretakers, and its supporters lose sight of right and wrong due to the euphoria of on field success and the fact that Dame Stardom is escorting little Johnny to the prom.

What Ron was saying was - and he's full of bull btw

Oct 1, 2012, 10:39 PM

that people like him are all that's standing in the way of something like Penn State happening.

Well I have news for Ron - this happened at Penn State for a long, long time and no media member wrote about it until it blew open.

They didn't write about it because they were covering it up. They didn't know about it.

Ron is under the impression that people like him or the only ones that can bring light to such situations.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ron Morris is a hack sell-out looking to stir up either

Oct 1, 2012, 10:58 PM

praise or hate to help produce more eyeballs and sell the sorry rag he writes for.

BTAIM, Spurrier is an embarrassment and represents so much that is wrong with college athletics. Before he came here to rescue the program from its prior coaching legend's failure and help the dirtpeckers secure 5th place conference rings for a miracle 11-win season, you and every other [Go]####-loving chump despised him for the dirtbag he was at Florida. Now that he's yours, coots are so far up his ### by now that the smell has manifested into sweet perfume.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Disagree on both accounts

Oct 1, 2012, 11:01 PM

I like Ron Morris. I've told him that many times. I happen to believe his comment regarding Penn State was classless though- and I've told him that. He knows he screwed up.

I actually liked Spurrier a ton when he was at Florida. His last team at Florida was the best college team I ever saw in person. Yes, most Gamecock fans didn't like him- just like most Clemson fans hated Brad Scott's guts when he was at USC- and loved in a week later when he was hired at Clemson.

That's not particularly unusual.

Oct 1, 2012, 11:06 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's not what Ron was trying to say

Oct 2, 2012, 12:26 AM [ in reply to What Ron was saying was - and he's full of bull btw ]

He was talking about the way the Penn St created a culture to where JoePa and the football program where given preferential treatment from the university and could do what they pleased and were never questioned about it. Criticism and things JoePa did and got away with were reported all the time up there. Like I said, up in those parts local residents of the area knew exactly what went on there. Growing up with a family of Pitt and Penn St alums I was told all the time over the years how dirty JoePa was. The school would just protect JoePa, deny it, and sweep it under the rug. That's what Spurrier's trying to create here and what Morris was comparing it to.

The only reason why Morris felt it was a bad comparison and what Doyle touched on was the fact that it was too soon after this whole molestation scandal happened and a lot of people, like you, would look more at a comparison to that instead of what he was trying to get at.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oh and here's proof stuff was reported on the program

Oct 2, 2012, 12:44 AM

and swept under the rug. Read this article written a full 7 MONTHS before the Sandusky scandal broke. How come no one talked about it? Penn St was doing what they always did and tried hard to sweep it away. Unfortunately it was too big to do. Also pay attention to this comment:

"But there's no shortage of stories and rumors about Penn State football sweeping problems under the rug, is there?"

http://www.timesonline.com/columnists/sports/mark_madden/madden-sandusky-a-state-secret/article_863d3c82-5e6f-11e0-9ae5-001a4bcf6878.html#user-comment-area

Here's another article about JoePa. Notice the comments about his ego, his invincibility. That's the comparison to Spurrier Morris was making.

It is pathetic that you and other USC fans don't get it

Oct 1, 2012, 10:37 PM

Steve Spurrier believes he is more important than your school. Tanner's reaction and that of WOLO and your fans confirms he is right. No good will come of this for your school. At best you will be lucky to win an SEC ease "title" and sell your soul in the process

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Disagree

Oct 1, 2012, 10:41 PM

Sorry- you are spinning.

WOLO made a business decision. That's their right.

I don't know why you are talking about wins or losses. That has nothing to do with the topic or issue. That's a personal deal with you.

Re: It is pathetic that you and other USC fans don't get it

Oct 2, 2012, 12:21 AM [ in reply to It is pathetic that you and other USC fans don't get it ]

I think it is hilarious that you taters are acting the way you do. How is Spurrier above the school? He has a writer that writes false information about him. He's done it before and continues to do it. He has had enough with MoRon's lies and has voiced his opinion on the issue. If WOLO wants to take off Monday with Morris its their decision, no one watched it anyways.

Spurrier has done so much for our program and is setting it up for current and FUTURE success. Everyone questions the leaders of the best programs in any given industry, football is no different but compairing the situation at PSU with USC shows how stupid you guys are.

I think this may be my first post on this site and I have to say, this message board is cute. I remember when I made my first forum in middle school.

Facts:

Oct 1, 2012, 10:47 PM

Your coach intimated that Ron would lose - and he lost his pt job at WOLO
Your AD called The State to defend Spurrier
Your coach said he would leave for the beach and would have rather coached at the real Carolina
He just gave you and every USuC fan the finger. You really are a sad bunch. Remember this when he $crews you when it suits him.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Let me correct your facts

Oct 1, 2012, 11:06 PM

My coach said that changes were coming to the newspaper, not WOLO tv - the station with the lowest local news ratings in Columbia.

Spurrier didn't give a rip about Morris' lame WOLO gig. Heck, Ron rarely - if ever- talked about college stuff on the WOLO gig. He was usually complaining about minor league baseball, or jerseys in the NFL, or the Cubs continuing to lose.

Yes, our AD did defend his football coach- which is exactly what I expect my AD to do unless he's doing something ethically wrong. In fact, he better stand by him.

disgreee- he just said what every college fan wants to hear their coach say when they believe a local opinion writer is pushing the edge too much.

If Dabo stood up and fussed about Phil Kornblut, you'd pee in your pants you'd be so happy. you sure wouldn't be on here talking about how wrong it was- and how he "runs the university"

PK isn't a writer in Clemson. RM is a writer in Columbia and it is his job to follow and write about the dirt peckers.

PK actually tries to influence a recruit's decision to come to Clemson. How often does Ron Morris call USuCk recruits and try to talk them out of going to dirtpeckerU?

Spurrier is a doucheface on a power trip, and is trying to take away the livelihood of someone who wrote and spoke negatively of the ol ball sack.
