Renaming Tillman is stupid...

Jan 14, 2015, 1:11 PM

...making an issue for the sake of making an issue. Will renaming Tillman solve the problem, no.

I was initially opposed to renaming Tillman Hall as well....partially because I figured dirt could be dug up on anyone tabbed for the new naming......However, I've come to the conclusion if the BOT wanted to name the building for RC & Moonpie, I don't think I'd have an objection....

Jan 14, 2015, 1:20 PM

Students protesting the name of Tillman Hall should be asked to go somewhere else!

people complain about this and that on TV.

Don't watch it, and police your own kids from watching it.

I am personally offended by Tillman Hall

Jan 14, 2015, 1:35 PM

It reminds me of the past, present, and future. I am an anti-timest and I feel that time only separates and categorizes us. On a more serious note, Ben Tillman was an outspoken racist and the proposal to name it Tillman Hall was by his son. I am not saying we should try and rewrite history but we aren't just talking about the kind of covert racism that is whispered behind closed doors, he was very vocal about his racism and used public platforms to try and maintain and further increase a divide, not congruent with the "One Clemson" ideal.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If not for tillman there is not clemson

Jan 14, 2015, 1:39 PM

Also back in his time he was a "normal person" nota raciest.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly. We can point out terrible things about all SC

Jan 14, 2015, 2:02 PM

politicians. Lindsey Graham? Oh yeah. Haley? Word. Thurmond? Oh dear.

People are offended by politicians, as they should be. They pretty much universally stink. But Tillman wasn't any more stinky than his counterparts at the time.

Re: I am personally offended by Tillman Hall

Jan 14, 2015, 1:54 PM [ in reply to I am personally offended by Tillman Hall ]

John C. Calhoun was an outspoken proponent of slavery. Thomas Green Clemson was the director of agriculture in the early 1860s and a proponent of slavery because he recognized the economic advantages it gave the south. At the outset of the civil war he sided with the confederacy despite being from a Union state (Philadelphia). Should we rename anything named after Calhoun? Should we rename the school?

Seriously you being offended by the name of a building is petty. Its a building. It doesn't represent Benjamin Tillman's ideals as a person, simply his contribution to the school.

This politically correct nonsense is just that, nonsense. What's next? Are we going to destroy Mount Rushmore because two of the faces depicted were slave owners while one was an outspoken racist (Lincoln) and the other was a racist by today's terms?

As for "anti-timest", that doesn't mean anything. Time separates and categorizes us because its a necessity for that to be the case. We are in a different category from those that lived 200 years ago. We are separate from them. Our society, our country are phenomenally different than anything those people ever experienced. To imply that you don't want to acknowledge that separation is childish and ignorant, because whether you agree with it or not, it is there.

Re: Renaming Tillman is stupid...

I agree Tillman Hall was there and it's name was there prior to these pc I wanna whine about something.. I don't feel safe fools. So after you are accepted to the school then you want to change the school. Apply somewhere else. Preferably a school out west that way it has no history

Go Tigers! Once A Tiger Always A Tiger

Plus Ben Tillman lived way back when - that was.....

Jan 14, 2015, 1:43 PM

the way things tended to be in his day. Nobody with any sense should feel that anyone officially tied to Clemson in this day and age feels the way he did.

Until today with this story coming out, how many people thought of racist remarks and attitudes when they thought of Tillman Hall? It's ridiculous.

Then Clemson had better separate itself ASAP then from people like Strom Thurmond, etc.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

just rename it Tilman with 1 L

Jan 14, 2015, 1:55 PM

Too easy

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why stop at Tilman...

Jan 14, 2015, 2:06 PM

We should deport anyone named Ben.

Wait till they find out slaves built part of USCjr

Jan 14, 2015, 2:09 PM

http://library.sc.edu/digital/slaveryscc/

or that it was closed to remove black sudents after the civil war.

"State leaders revived the institution in 1866 as the University of South Carolina with ambitious plans for a diverse university that included the first African-Americans to serve on the board of trustees (1868) and the first African-American students (1873).

While politically controversial, this development was an extraordinary opportunity for South Carolinians at a time when opportunities for higher education were rare. The University of South Carolina became the only Southern state university to admit and grant degrees to African-American students during the Reconstruction era.

But with a nearly empty state treasury, the institution failed to reach its former status. Following the end of Reconstruction in 1877, South Carolina's conservative leaders closed the university. They reopened it in 1880 as an all-white agricultural college and during the next 25 years the institution became enmeshed in the upheaval of late 19th century South Carolina politics. "
