Religion in the voting booth

Mar 20, 2014, 12:24 PM

I am considered a religious person, although I would not describe myself in such a manner. And I try to keep to myself in most cases- at work, at games, while eating in a restaurant, etc. I'm not the evangelistic type.

One thing that bothers me is when I hear someone say "keep your religion out of the voting booth." It bothers me because I don't ask people to keep their world belief, experiences, emotions, and opinions out of the voting both. Why should I?

(Before I continue, I am a firm believer in the seperation of church and state. My political beliefs most closely resemeble a libertarian. So while I have a Biblical view on marriage, abortion, etc, I don't belive morality can be legislated. And I am commanded above all else to love.)

I respect the rights of others. I respect the right of a person to be as informed or ignorant as they wish. And it doesn't make sense to me to ask someone to be something they aren't. (Insert gay/lesbian argument here.) I don't ask a gay man to stop being gay when he votes, or a farmer to stop thinking about his crops/family.

To be more personal, the last six years I've had an unqualified, idealist as President. He was elected by the people of this country. You know what I had to do about it? Accept. It. Yeah, novel concept.

I could fill up entire message boards with posts that detail the incompetence of our currnet POTUS, and how it directly effects me and my family. I could go into a Fox-ian denial streak and belive conspiracies about birth documents and ties to Islam. Or...I can accept what's happened and what is happening. The great and terrible thing about voting as often as Americans do is that nothing lasts longer than the next election.

So I ask for a reasoned response. Why should anyone be expected to drop their religious beliefs when voting? Moreover, would you ask a woman to stop being a woman, a teacher to stop being a teacher, an elderly person worried about social security to stop being old?

I expect teachers, gays, soldiers, Asians, rednecks, and hipsters to vote according to their value sets. That's the point of our Republic.
