Recruiting rankings

Right now we are 4th in Rivals rankings. We are literally 1 point behind Georgia. If Fields were to commit now and everything remains the same then we would jump Georgia and be 24 points behind FSU. Mix in Wilkins and we would easily jump FSU. Even though we don't have as many 4 stars we have better talent overall. That doesn't count that if any of our guys show out in all star games then they could earn a 4th or 5th star. Though if we are playing the speculative game, they could also lose a star. I don't think any of our guys would lose anything though. If anything guys like Chad Smith and Deon Cain are candidates for a 5th star. Example of all this moving and shaking is the 4th star that Boulware earned in the Under Armour game last year. I digress. We need to land Fields and clearly Wilkins would be a welcome addition too.

That's pretty impressive. They may have a couple more on the way, too.
The main problem for us is that we're only taking one or two more players, tops. FSU and Alabama may still take 4-6 more guys.

Thats why that won't bother me. Each team can only put 11 out there at a time. If we recruit the right numbers every year and those numbers are talented then I don't care if they take 90 recruits a cycle and cut 55 of them. Exaggeration obviously. If we get Fields and Wilkins then we have met every immediate and longterm need while also doing it with some of our best talent.

When you look at the difference between the national championship and the 8-10 win teams, the biggest difference is in the teams' depth. The 8 win team might have one star player on both sides of the ball, but if that guy goes out, they're a much different team. The championship team has backups who would start at most schools. That's why when SEC schools are able to oversign, it really gives them an advantage.

We are able to oversign, its not an SEC thing. We just don't because Clemson and some or most ACC schools have integrity. cough FSU, cough UNC
However, I think we are recruiting well enough to be a 50/50 opponent with FSU. We would only play Alabama in post season play. I think that we can play with BAMA (if DW plays). Maybe we wouldn't be able to every year. But if we were able to play them in a playoff next year, I would like our chances.

I totally agree that depth and QB play are THE differences in championship teams because injuries will always be a factor during a season and some players you think will work out don't. That being said, I think it is far more important to balance recruiting more so than trying to win a recruiting championship. What I mean is that we could finish number 1 every year in recruiting but load up on skill players with lots of stars to do so and we will be stuck at 8-10 wins per year. However, if we finish in the top 10 every year in recruiting and bring in a balance of players (ex: OL, DL, WR, TE, QB, and so on...) to create depth we will have a floor of 10 wins on a down year rather than a ceiling of 10. If you finish in the top 10 every year in recruiting with a balanced class you will compete for the playoff consistently. Not really concerned about finishing #1 in rankings since typically the the class ranked #1 on signing day would not be ranked #1 3-4 years later. I really think USuC is experiencing a drop off because they have not recruited consistently with the top teams in the country. If you are counting on developing mid level prospects you will have stretches when you just are not good enough to compete. They missed on some prospects that are playing now and will need to fix that in recruiting but I don't know if Spurier has time to do so at his age but we will see. Just my 2 cents.

clarification: we wouldn't gain that much because it only takes the top 20?? So Fields would be a net gain of 77. However, we would still move ahead of UGA and then we would pass FSU by 2 points with a Wilkins commitment as well.
