Recruiting by the stars!!!

May 16, 2016, 11:44 AM

I think that with most of us when we see that we have made an offer to a recruit. The first thing we do is look to see who else is recruiting this player. When we see that most of the top 10 programs are also recruiting this kid, what are your thoughts about the kid that until then you knew nothing about him???

But seriously I reserve all judgement until I've watched video and considered the level of competition

I remember my first beer too..

It was a hot Coors Light that I shared with the Cole brothers while sitting against a weedy dirt burm that had been put up at the end of a nearby dead end road...age 11 I believe.

It made me convince myself I didn't like beer.

True Story.

Take comfort in knowing that our staff is all over this recruiting thing like chaff on wild rice .
That's the way I view it , that my Rivals account is really only used to view what the coaches already have a hundred times .
I know nothing , I see nothing .

This. I truly envy some people on here who have the time

To constantly research recruits so they know what color underwear the recruit is wearing everyday.

Re: Recruiting by the stars!!!

Generally, my thoughts on recruits go like this... If we are after a kid, I will go watch as much film as I can of them and then draw some personal conclusions. I also look to see who else has offered and then also what Rivals thinks. Generally, I agree most of the time and Rivals seems to be pretty accurate.

Most of the time you can look at Rivals and infer that a 5 star kid is very talented but also very ready physically and often mentally. 4 stars cover a big range and many are just not quite 5 stars because they were a step slower than their peers, had an injury that prevented them truly showing out at the time, need weight or functional strength, might be playing a different position, etc., 3 stars are most common and basically run from the player has FBS potential to a really good player who came on late or played mediocre competition while not attending many camps. 2 stars are usually guys with terrible grades or virtual unknowns that were offered by only 1 P5 school (ex. Renfrow, Humphries-unknowns, Branch- grades)

However, the Rivals analysis does little more than indicate overall talent and when they should be expected to play.
5 stars- should be albe to contribut as a true freshman
4 stars- should be a contributor by 2nd year either as a Sophomore or RS Freshman
3 stars- should be a contributor by 3rd year either as Junior or RS Sophomore
2 stars- N/A
This is my general assumption but individual team depth charts and overall talent can change this a lot.

In short, there are a lot of factors but I trust my eyes first and the coaches 2nd. Sometimes they offer out of necessity or as a placeholder that a kid jumps on. I think of a guy like Shadell Bell (who could still be a good player) , they liked him and tried to issue a placeholder scholarship and he bit and they honored it but they probably would have pursued other more desirable targets had he not committed when he did.

Ill tell you one thing

im so dad-gum impressed with the way this staff sees potential and recruits 3 star, 2 star, or walk-ons. No one in the country does a better job than Swinney & Co at finding and developing "overlooked talent"(if you can even call it that).

To be honest, the first thing that comes to mind is that they have been offered by the big schools bc they are putting their name in the pot with those recruit bc they could have an interest later on in recruiting. But it doesn't mean that they would accept a commitment from those recruits to early in the process. Just like with some that we have offered but never hear anymore from, and it's bc we have backed off for another that would fit in at Clemson better. I think that only very serious offers are only given to about 80% of the 5 star players.

If Clemson offered...I trust he will be a great player. I trust our coaches to find the right fit for our program. It is interesting to see what other programs have offered.

I pay more attention

May 16, 2016, 7:56 PM

to who's recruiting him than I do the stars. Evaluation varies so greatly between Rivals, Espn, 247 and Scout that I'm not so sure they're reliable unless there is a consensus ranking. If we've offered a kid the first thing I look for is who else is recruiting him. If I see Bama, Ohio State, Stanford, FSU...etc. Then I get excited for this kid.

Sometimes I wonder if some of those schools watch to see if we offer first. Our staff has an uncanny eye for talent.

I also see who has offered and where the kid is from and their size. I notice our staff generally likes the taller lean greyhoundesque athletes. Very, very seldom watch game video of the kids; I trust our guys more than my option to know who we offer. Dabo has done a great job!
