Tech-Clemson:

Jul 18, 2015, 9:20 PM

Does it bother you guys that you play Notre Dame the week before you play us? A lot of schools like to get that off-week prior to Tech, in order to get extra practice time. I know you have an off-week before ND. But I don't see you getting a ton of prep time for the triple option prior to our game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, it doesn't.

Jul 18, 2015, 9:21 PM

Any other questions?

We play in Death Valley this year ...with a healthy , second year Watson .
So , no worries . I just hope that the " Cripple-Option " plays well from behind ...because you will be trying to catch up from the first Tiger possession .

Re: Tech-Clemson:

Jul 18, 2015, 9:28 PM

I'm not worried about playing in DV. We've had our share of wins up there over the years. Not lately, but in our series, the homefield isn't as big an advantage as other series.

I am worried about a healthy Watson. That kid is a good QB.

I'm not really confident about facing Clemson. But I'm not afraid either. It's a great rivalry, and I look forward to our next game.

Maybe. But too early to say that...

Jul 18, 2015, 9:39 PM

I think the ACC is getting better, and it's going to be tough for any team to get through the schedule and make it to Charlotte. That includes FSU, too.

On the Coastal side, we've been competitive for the entire CPJ era. Over 7 years, we've been to the ACC title game 3 times.

I'm always worried about Miami and VT. Those 2 programs have given us problems over the years. They have good talent and good coaching. And heck, last year our 2 regular season losses were UNC & Duke. I used to laugh at Duke. But with Cutcliffe, they're actually a good team now. Last year, they kicked our butts.

Clemson will be very good next year. You guys should probably be favored in the Atlantic.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think people don't realize how good the GT QB is...

Jul 19, 2015, 7:35 AM

And with a good, smart, athletic QB who can actually throw he ball well, CPJ's system is dangerous because they can not only control time of possession, but score quick if they fall behind. I think this will be just as hard a game as Louisville or Notre Dame. Not as hard as FSU though. Only thing that could bring FSU down is having key players being cited for violence and getting kicked off the team.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I think people don't realize how good the GT QB is...

Jul 21, 2015, 8:27 AM

Agreed Thomas is a very good QB. But Watson is an incredible QB too. I feel like everyone is relying way too much on Thomas. I'm not saying GT won't be a good team and a tough match up again as they always are. But they lost every single player who touches the ball on the offensive side of the ball except for Thomas. I mean everyone!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nah,

Jul 18, 2015, 9:38 PM

without Cole scoring more on Clemson that your triple option offense you won't have a snowball's chance in helll of beating a Brent Venables coached team.

Jul 18, 2015, 9:47 PM

I would like an extra week and not be coming off a BIG game like ND.

One good thing is we play Wofford the first game. Wofford runs a similar offense as GT. They don't run it nearly as well as GT, but we'll get a good look at the offense from someone that knows how to run it.

Jul 18, 2015, 10:00 PM

You're being honest, and I appreciate it.

From my view, no matter what happens the week before, Clemson will be ready for us and we'll be ready for them. It's just that kind of game, that kind of rivalry. We will be ready. Clemson will be ready, too.

Hey Smitty,

What are your thoughts on ND/GaTech? I am always concered when ND plays option teams. We frankly don't defend well against them. And Paul Johnson is one of the premier coaches in the business. I think most ND folks believe that GaTech will be our toughest game out of the first four.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

should be a good game...

Jul 18, 2015, 10:17 PM

It's early enough in the season to where I think ND will have practiced a good bit against our offense during August. We do have better athletes than Navy. So, I think we'll give ND a good game. I'm sure ND will be favored though. It's in South Bend. And you guys have great talent as well as very good coaching.

I dunno. I've seen ND struggle with option teams too many times in recent years. I am very concerned about this game. I agree-you guys have better athletes than Navy---much better. And we have had our troubles against the Mids. Home field is always nice, but the last time you guys came to South Bend, you stomped us. I remember it well.

Yes, that was in 2007...

Jul 18, 2015, 10:26 PM

That game was a blast from the Tech side, and very unexpected. I was stunned at how badly we won that game. IIRC, we completely dominated that game. But you had defeated us the year before in Atlanta. Was that 2007 game a precursor to the downfall of Charlie Weiss?

The way I see it, ND will be favored. YOu should be favored. You might have trouble with the option. But our defense is never all that good under CPJ. We usually have to outscore teams, and rarely shut anyone down. The Irish will probably move the ball well against us. So, we'll see.

I was at that game. Was at the 2006 game in Atlanta too. The 2007 game may have been the worst single game I have ever seen ND play. We couldn't move the ball at all and we couldn't stop you guys. Just terrible all the way around. I knew then that Weis was not the man. He proved it many times after that too.

the talent level Georgia Tech had in 2006 and 2007(Chan Gailey's recruits) was much, much better than the talent level you guys will see against GT this year.

But our quarterback is much much better than anything they saw in 2006 or 2007 from us. In general, our offense is better. Defensively, yeah we're not a bunch of 5-stars. But we never were.

Given that Notre Dame struggles mightily with Navy, I think they might have a hard time with us. However, they will still probably be favored, and I think that's probably right. If I weren't biased, I'd pick ND in this game. Can't wait to play it.

Yeah, ND will probably be favored, but that is meaningless. You have to do it on the field. And that is what concerns me. Unless ND makes some great strides in terms of defending the option, ND is going to have to outscore GaTech. That could be a problem.

Re: Yes, that was in 2007...

Jul 21, 2015, 8:43 AM

Keep in mind, if GTech's offense is working, the opposing team gets maybe 7-8 possessions to try and score. And everytime they don't, the opportunity to make up ground shrinks exponentially unless you get turnovers. That is why CPJ's offense is so insidiously dangerous. That and the opportunity for injuries to linemen's knees.

God bless him. He knows how to level the playing field, that is for sure. I have always liked CPJ because he is a screwed, tough coach, but I hate having to play against him!

Jul 18, 2015, 11:06 PM

On one hand, you would always want an extra week after a big game. But it is kinda like any other game
where we don't get that lucky. Just hope we don't get an unlucky break like last year more than anything.

Side note: I just bought my tickets this week for the tech game and I am beyond excited. I haven't been
to a game against tech yet.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Tech will be a tough match...

Jul 18, 2015, 11:33 PM

Honestly, I think yall may be the toughest game all year. I'm not very familiar with your defense, but lets just say that in last year's outing, Cole Stoudt was one of the best players on yalls D.

With Watson, I sincerely don't see you guys stopping our offense. If there is one thing this program gets right and gets right consistently, it is the skill position. Couple that with a QB that had a similar rating to Mariota and we're talking about a well oiled machine.

Our defense will have to be ready. This will be key. I don't think we can afford to lose many guys this year to injury (and who would ever want to?) so I hope we come away unscathed.

Truth be told, I think we play yall twice this year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Jul 19, 2015, 8:07 AM

Even the most orange-blooded among us would rather play someone a little less hyped that Notre Dame the week before y'all come to town. But, hey, to paraphrase an old name in Clemson lore, "We got who we got when we got 'em."

What will we do about it? Well, having Wofford a few weeks before may be our best preparation. They aren't on y'alls level by any means. But the Terriers' similar style will serve us well, both as a live scrimmage and film breakdowns to correct any coverage gaffes.

Also with an unholy long break before the BB Heads, I thinks it's safe we'll use a chunk of that time to prep for y'all ... and to remind the guys of just what we were doing to you before DW got hurt.

As always, it'll be a good one. Hope to see you there!
