Wondering if Wes switches to a 3-4

Dec 6, 2022, 9:50 AM

Defense next year. Saw some people on twitter discussing it and it makes since. Losing a lot of talent at DE but will bring back a strong DT room even if some guys leave. Lots of talent at LB that Wes might want to capitalize on. Also lots of 3 - 4 looks vs UNC.

That's a very good question *****

Early for me to say how well it will work but generally, I’m a fan of coaches adapting scheme to fit players we have. If this helps us get our best players on the field and we run it well, could be fun to watch and give other teams some new looks on defense. Go Tigers!

Not knowing much about it but would a 3-4 defense put much pressure on the QB.

You can get good pressure with a 3-4, but you really need the D-line to be space eaters. New England ran a good one when they had Vince Wilfork in the middle. Pittsburg did it with Casey Hampton. Got to have big guys that can tie up the O-line, draw double teams. That leaves it open for the LBs to run around without interference. One of the LBs is still going to be your speed DE, think a Vic Beasley type. Speedy enough to sometimes cover a TE, but strong enough to handle/beat a OT one on one.

Think having a 3-4 lineup that like this
DE Bresee (6-5, 305)
DT Dexter Lawrence (6-4, 340) *space eater that gets double teamed but still gets good pressure
DE Tyler Davis (6-2, 300) or Miles Murphy* (6-5, 275) *bit undersized, but still commands attention

OLB KJ Henry (6-4, 255) can be the rush LB from standing up or drop into coverage
MLB Ben Boulware (6-1, 235) or Jeremiah Trotter (6-0, 230)
MLB Trenton Simpson (6-3, 240) or Barrett Carter (6-1, 225)
OLB Xavier Thomas (6-2, 255) can be a rush LB standing up or put his hand in the dirt

I'd probably lean more to swap out Thomas as I see him as more of a liability in coverage. Maybe for like Vic Beasley with a little bit better cover skills, but still primarily a rusher.

Depends on if XT and Mascoll return

Dec 6, 2022, 9:55 AM

which I think is likely. We're good at DT. Depth at LB will be really young unless we bring in a transfer or the unlikely event Simpson returns.

Carter and Trotter are back.. also Woodaz looks like a stud to fill Simpsons place. LB will be a strong position

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You have nothing but freshmen behind them

Dec 6, 2022, 2:09 PM

if Maguire is the 4th.

We are good at DT regardless if Ruke and Bresee leave. If XT and Mascoll return, you have top 100 guys like Denhoff and Patterson along with three, 4 star edge rushers in this class and also Woods who could play there aa depth. This not counting any possible portal guy

If Bresee were to return, move home to DE!***

Not a chance. We could hardly have a two deep with 4.

Dec 6, 2022, 10:12 AM

If you look at our defensive front four and our linebacker depth on the scholarship breakdown you will see that it seems HIGHLY unlikely that we will suddenly change our defensive philosophy.

We run a good bit of 3-4 most every game.

Wes uses multiple looks.

To a more simplified version of Venables system.

Who knows what we’ll see.

I think that generally depends on personnel on defense and offense. Bad defense, 3 man defense good offense ,4 man front. Personnel are always the determining factor as to what they try. We have been very blessed with good defense line and being able to go either way
