Sammy Watkins

May 5, 2012, 3:55 PM

Sammy Watkins is not a role model, you people need to stop with this crap. He's a young imperfect black man with a lot of talent and a pretty good head on his shoulders. He's a kid, kids make mistakes, kids do dumb things, kids follow the crowd. As a black man I'm sick of all the role model talk. Its hard enough for most people to be who they are. Who did he let down, he didn't let me down because he's a kid, most of us do not even know him personally.I would hate to see him not learn from this mistake as others have did in the past, but life is a learning process. Did he kill someone, did he rape a women, did he stick up a bank, there are so much more things in life to be worried about. Sammy has parents, and i'm sure there good and loving parents, it's there son, not ours, so let them deal with him in a loving manor without all the hypocrisy. Many people smoke weed, they just haven't been caught. He smokes weed, he smokes cigarettes, so who's the worst of the two? And be a role model to your own kids. It's a shame how some people rely on others to be role models to there kids. And let me ask a ? what is it about Sammy Watkins that makes him a role model. He catches football's people. Leave the kid alone, worry about your dirty laundry instead of the wins on loses. Its not going to affect recruiting, because most kids start smoking weed in high school, the just need to be more educated about the pro's and con's to smoking weed. Kids do what kids want to do when they get a certain age, doesn't mean you didn't raise them right!

Let it be known:

May 5, 2012, 4:06 PM

A black man is the first on this situation to call out another person's skin color.

Please, for the love of all things Clemson, DO NOT make this about race...

This is about a kid that made a stupid mistake, and NOTHING else, sir.

Go Tigers.

yes the black man is the first on this situation to call out his skin color because as a black man I know how hard it is for blacks when mistakes are made cutigr62® of this magnitude. I have kids, one who is being highly recruited by Clemson as we speak. Don't get it twisted, yes we love Clemson, but the world does not revolve around Clemson. And as far a race is concerned last time I checked we were all part of the human race, so before you want to make the case that skin color does not play apart in sports your delusional my friend! I see people more concerned with the number of games he will miss, and no concern about the other student that was charged in this case as well. I have seen far worst than this happen in college sports, but money can make lots of things go away.

I don't even know where to start with this reply...

It's comments like these that are the real problem surrounding racial equality... I don't understand why being black vs. being white makes it any different. I look around, and the '60's are LONG gone. You can throw statistics at me, you can give me a history book, but proclaiming your race and how different things are for you doesn't make anyone feel sorry for you, it just annoys people.

Be thankful that you and yours are in a position that Clemson is willing to even look. (I'm not saying this to verify your comments on the world revolving around Clemson. Heck, I never even said anything related to that. I am saying this because I'm speaking to you as a student that had to and is still fighting for every grade I earn at Clemson.) It's a great place that is very oriented on becoming a family.

And yes, blacks tend to be more athletic than whites. WHO CARES?

/endrant/

Go Tigers

just because he is still a kid in your eyes doesnt mean hes a kid to someone younger

May 5, 2012, 4:16 PM

He might be imperfect, but saying he isnt a role model is just incorrect. There are thousands of people in middle and high school that look up to someone, just like you looked up to college students when you where really young. Do I hate him or does it ruin my perception of him? No, because I dont believe half of the fairytale bs colleges pump out about their athletes, mainly because I see athletes everyday. However, there is probably a middleschooler out there that will be somehow affected by Sammys decision, and he will have to live with that mistake the rest of his life. Everyone is a role model to someone.

I agree. Apparently he's forgotten even primary schoolers lookup to those in middle school, and those children lookup to those in Junior High...and so on. It's a chain.
GO TIGERS!!!
(If that wasn't the case, the kids wouldn't be lining up for autographs).

Re: Sammy Watkins

The only really important thing we can all hope for with Sammy and all of our high profile athletes, is that they demonstrate an appreciation for their own amazing talents and the special privilege it is to continue on as a Tiger after such an episode. The only really important part of this story is forward looking....... what does Sammy do to overcome this and grow from it? It's up to him to then decide whether or not he wants to be a positive or negative influence on others. That's really the same decision every one of us has to make in our own lives.

Of course he is a role model. He has been a role model even to me and I am 75 years old. Race has nothing to do with it. He is probably the best athlete I have ever seen in my life and had a very good chance of winning the Heisman Trophy. I am sad for Sammy that he threw that chance away. I wish him the very best but he knows he has disappointed many people including his family and his coaches. It is up to him to lift himself back up and he knows that he will have the support to do just that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Whether you like it or not...

May 5, 2012, 7:25 PM

he is a role model. He shouldn't be, mind you, but he is simply due to his celebrity and athletic ability. I have great parents who were themselves role models, but I also as a youth looked up to certain celebrities of the era (athletes, entertainers) as role models. It's human nature (especially juvenile nature) to idolize and elevate those that impress you for whatever reason, no matter whether they're perfect or not.

On a side note, what does his being black have to do with anything? Are you saying that he should get a pass because he's black and, hey, everybody's doing it, y'know? - because that's what it sounds like. I mean, really, can he just - novel idea - not smoke weed? Last I heard, it was kinda illegal.

Re: Whether you like it or not...

May 5, 2012, 8:12 PM

No Im not saying he should get a pass at all, what im saying is as a young black man he has been told time and time again what a honor he has in going to college. Because people want to call him a roll model, the ones looking up to him will be mainly black kids who grew up in the same types of family he did. This has nothing to do with white versus black, i don't remember throwing anyone white under the bus. All I ever hear about mainly are the young black athletes in the news, so with that being said as a black athlete you have to be very careful about what you do. As a Athlete you have to be careful.(but he is simply due to his celebrity and athletic ability) this is what you posted and I agree, but take this away and why is he a role model,I feel we put to much pressure on these kids, let them live, make mistakes and learn from them. If he breaks his leg and can't perform at a rate he once did, lets see how many jump of the bandwagon!

Black or white makes no difference here. When he accepted his scholly he agreed to represent our university and being arrested for illegal activity is unacceptable. I hate it for him as much as anybody but sweepin it under the rug is not ok. I dont know how many of you remember several months ago a rumor of sammy being arrested was started and Dabo came to his defense and said I dont have to worry about Sammy being arrested. Like it or not he has to be punished or we are no better than what goes on at coot u.

Re: Sammy Watkins

May 5, 2012, 9:54 PM

I basically disagree with most that's said in this OP's post. Yes - regardless whether anyone wants to admit it or not - Watkins is a role model to probably the entire CLEMSON nation. As far as skin color - that should NEVER be brought into the conversation regarding Watkins. I could care less if he's black, white, or chinese. If you're saying that being black should give him a pass because it's harder on blacks or something like that - then I call BS on that. No - Watkins needs to pay for his wrongdoing. He represents CLEMSON on a national scale in case nobody notices. He's been interviewed by Erin Andrews of ESPN specifically because he is the absolute best player we have - and maybe ever had. If you represent on that scale, then you'd better behave and follow ALL THE RULES. If not, he needs to be tucked away and no more interviews, etc where he can possibly represent this fine institution. Believe it or not, CLEMSON is still bigger than Watkins.

Show a little respect.

May 6, 2012, 11:57 AM

You present a problem. I'm not quite sure how being black for either you or Sammy has anything to do with Sammy's being 'looked up to,' by children or his being, as we say, role model.

He is looked up to because of his athletic ability. His character and decision making ability are now on trial. Everyone here believes he will grow from this adversity and become an even better man and role model. When this is behind him he will be able to identify with a larger demographics of children, the ones who have strayed from the straight and narrow.

Show a little respect to us and Sammy and don't make race a part of this discussion.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that's similar to Charles Barkley's view

May 6, 2012, 12:28 PM

But athletes are role models whether they like it or not. Kids admire their abilities and look up to them; should we just ignore everything else they do that's smart or stupid? Being a college or professional athlete is kind of like driving - it's a privilege, not a right; you don't have to be one, you choose to. And sports are entertainment where fans are customers, so telling them to ignore you except when you're playing is ironic and biting the hand that feeds you.
