those guys are going to be too old to play in the NFL by the time they finally leave college? Look at Sam Hartman, he ought to be close to signing a SECOND contract by the time he actually sees the field for an NFL franchise.

There are some special cases in the NFL, too. Just look at DW4. He will be entering his seventh year in the league in 2024, but has actually only played THREE seasons worth of games due to injury, sitting out, suspensions, etc. 66 total games. Compare that to Patrick Mahomes, who came in at the same time as Watson. Mahomes has 96 total games of wear and tear on the body, almost two full seasons more than DW4.

Given the beating that bodies take in the NFL, that SHOULD translate to DW4 extending his career a couple of years beyond what his physical age would suggest. Even though Watson is 28 years old, in football terms, he is more like 25 or 26. Hopefully, next year he can get back on track to being the superstar he was before all the troubles began in Houston.

And, even though I am no particular Sam Hartman fan, I hope he, too, can make the NFL before he needs a walker and hearing aids, along with the other Covid Year players (which I know also includes XT) who have stretched out college to near double time.

Some of these guys seemingly will be eligible for Social Security and still have Covid eligibility left.

The 2025-2026 school year for any players that came in as freshman in the 2020-2021 school year. Although some players who got medical redshirts as well could be as long as the 26-27 school year--7 years of eligibility.

Just like DW4, it's all about seasons actually played, and abuse actually inflicted on the body. These portal guys are going to be going into the NFL with a LOT more "miles on the tires" than players in the past.

DW4 may not have played the number of games but the wear and tear exists. Playing behind bad Olines will beat up anyone. Brady definitely benefited from a clean pocket most of his career. It will be interesting to see if Watson’s arm recovers from the shoulder injury or is the beginning of his physical decline.
