We wore that combo twice in 2008 - SC State and Maryland. We also wore it in 2003.
In modern times, the rarest combo is Orange top and purple pants

I would think the 59 Bluebonnet Bowl when we wore navy blue so it would show better on black and white tv than orange jerseys.

the contrast between the LSU white jerseys and the Clemson orange
they were afraid in those days it may be hard to tell a difference between the two in black and white
so the Sugar Bowl ask Clemson to wear the Blue and Howard liked them.
He later had Clemson to wear them in other games and Howard called them the Sugar Blues.
