TV Money

In 2024 the Big Ten and SEC start their new TV deals where each school ends up with twice as much TV money as Clemson and FSU.

Am I crazy to think that by putting this much money in the hands of Rutgers, Indiana, Maryland, and Miss St will put Clemson and FSU at a disadvantage when it comes to keeping others from higher our coaching staffs away from us?

I think we can tread water for a while, but it's certainly not sustainable.

It’s very worrisome and on paper it is completely unsustainable. Everyone in the ACC will have so much less money that it should be impossible to compete.

However, there is always the possibility that the BIG and the SEC will self-destruct with wokeness. All of this extra money should go to the individual football players who are responsible for the product that makes all of the money. But let’s say they decide to squander all of those millions by paying equal amounts of serious money to every Division 1 athlete such that field hockey scholarships and Women’s soccer athletes , etc. get all of the same money and benefits as the football players. An extra $40 million doesn’t go a long way once the college administration steals most of it and then spreads the rest of it out to all of the athletes who aren’t earning it.

All of that extra money only matters if it goes to support football recruiting only. Never underestimate the corruption level of our universities to continue to steal and squander that money.

"put Clemson and FSU at a disadvantage when it comes to keeping others from higher our coaching staffs"

That's the part that I'm least worried about. The other conferences will have tons of money for the PLAYERS.

NIL money doesn't come directly from the schools...

NIL deals are funded by NIL collectives set-up by boosters and/or alumni.

Not yet, at least. That's going to be the next shoe to drop. Soon, schools will be able to share revenue with athletes. It's going to happen. That's why there's a mad dash to get out. Although, I still contend that's not the desired outcome. I think the desired outcome is to stay right where they are, but get more money than they're currently getting.

I think it's interesting that the ESPN has an option in 2027. I see some doomsday prophets out there saying the ACC will be without broadcast rights after 2027. But I think that option is there for this exact scenario. This whole FSU deal isn't about getting out of the ACC. I think it's about trying to force ESPN's hand with the 2027 option. Which I think will happen.

FSU is gone. Heading to the B1G, and they will not be the only ACC school to do so. I suspect UNC and Miami or Virginia as well.

Nah, I think their wording is interesting. If they were gone, they'd seek a preliminary injunction and go ahead and notify the ACC that they're leaving. But they didn't. They want to keep "lines of communication open". This is hardball negotiation at it's finest. They want more money...period.

ESPN could decide that the ACC contract isn't profitable enough for them so they want to end it in 2027, blow up the ACC, and try to divert certain schools to ESPN conferences (B12/SEC).

The time for hard negotiating has come and passed. They are breaking from the ACC. I'm sorry you refuse to see it, but soon you will. Others will follow.

It was FSU's attorney that said they're keeping the lines of communication open, and they weren't going to file a preliminary injunction. So far, their bark has been worse than their bite. Ultimately, ESPN will end up deciding it's fate.

Should that occur...

that would effectively put an end to the GOR and the ACC.

If you do mot need booster money for facilities and scholarships couldn’t all that money go into NIL. That is how they buy players.

I think what he's saying is, the more TV money that rolls in, the less they have to rely on boosters for big donations to fund the AD. The AD CAN speak with big boosters and inform them of the NIL needs they have and/or inform them that their $250K contribution isn't necessary this year, and direct them a collective to learn more about what is needed.

The revenue sharing through the NCAA is going to be from these television contracts and media rights, which come predominantly from African-American athletes playing football and basketball. The NCAA is very clear that they want to take this money earned by football and basketball male athletes and share it equally with all other non-revenue sports, across-the-board.

The money for paying football and basketball players is going to have to come outside of this through the NIL

ESPN should realize they are responsible for the collapse of the ACC. Shame on them.

Shame on the ACC for not negotiating a better deal.

At the time they signed, the money was good. And it did what the ACC members wanted it to do...lock everyone in long term. Everybody was all "ACC til I die!!" when Maryland left. Not sure how any of this is ESPN's fault.
