Tiger band member? I have Tiger Rag question..

What are the musical notes for the "hold that tiger" portion of Tiger Rag?
I am looking into a building set of custom air horns for my motorhome that will play those 4 notes and need to know the pitch for each. Thanks.

Not a band member, but that is a sweet idea. There a guy on game days that drive an early 90s Chevy conversion van with a horn like that. That van is all orange and I think has written solid orange on the spare tire cover. I hope you get this figured out. GO TIGERS!!!!

Keep in mind that this is concert pitch (or the key of C), so these notes are only applicable to piano, guitar, flute/piccolo, trombone, baritone and tuba (to state the basic C instruments). Hope this helps.

That's for the trumpet, which I believe is a B-flat instrument in my limited music knowledge. Shouldn't matter at all for a horn though.

I'm in the band.
The sheet music is on the tiger band website. The melody part to "hold that tiger" is on the 1st part trumpet piece.
Bb trumpet means it is tuned for a concert Bb, which on a standard trumpet is a "C".
I think the melody goes (the notes) "CCC, E, CCC,E, CCC, E". I memorized it a long time ago so I never think about it anymore.
It sounds a lot like "Dixie" which is what our fight song used to be. Our tiger rag is based off of it as well.

"Dixie" is a former Clemson fight song, but Tiger Rag is not "based off it."
Tiger Rag was a Dixieland Jazz song from the early 20th century, which was re-recorded by a great number of artists, including the Mills Brothers, who sang it... but I don't know if they were the first to put words to the tune.
The melody to Tiger Rag, which you correctly wrote out, is nothing like the melody of "Dixie."

Not "messing" with anyone, just correcting a mistake.
Sadly, for a great number of people, their assumptions determine their conclusions. Your assumption is that an ex-Tiger band member must be right... but the truth is not determined by allegiance to a school, but by whether the point in question is actually true or not. Trusting that a statement is true because of your own bias is how such mis-information becomes the "truth." Tell a lie often enough and people will start to believe it, even the person who started it... whether they did it intentionally or not.
FWIW... this "looser" has a masters degree in music, so as hard as it might be to believe, I might know what I'm talking about.

He wasn't saying Tiger Rag is based off of Dixie, he's saying our particular arrangement was influenced by Dixie (which is correct). There are tons of different arrangements to Tiger Rag. This is why LSU's sounds different than ours.

My previous comments were based on the original OP idea which was about the melodic notes of Tiger Rag, and I can't find that 4 note motif anywhere in Dixie. Now, I can see how one arrangement of a song could be similar to another... So if that's what he meant, I agree with you that he worded it a little weirdly.

They don't have to be the same chord progressions to be based off of another song. its all about rhythm, and that doesn't mean that it necessarily have to be the SAME rhythm. I can name several popular rock songs that are based off of "smells like teen spirit," and have different chords and slightly different rhythm. Dixie is a very popular song in the south and it makes sense that several bands have similar pieces inspired from it. I have already said if he was referring to style I could understand.
But you are missing the point about the wording.

His subject is "melody."
He follows that with four "it" pronouns.
Memorized "it."
Think about "it."
"It sounds..."
"Based off of it..."
The last "it" could refer to Dixie, I guess, but nowhere does he introduce the idea he is talking style... It reads as if he is referring to the melody of Tiger Rag sounding like Dixie and that Tiger Rag is based on Dixie.

Guys. I assume the differences between a C on a Bb trumpet or a Bb on a concert instrument is the same pitch/frequency? - Which would account for the difference in opinion

Can one of you give me the pitch (frequency) of those two notes (Bd and D) or (C and E) so that I can tell my horn maker how to tune these?
I know absolutely nothing about music, or the difference between a concert trumpet verses a regular one. I just want it to be recognizable.

The notes, in the key of C, are Bb and D. That would put you on the same pitches that our version of Tiger Rag use.
However I'm not sure if you're after the actual frequencies (as in hertz) or the notes.

Any Bb and D should be what you're after, but that's assuming you want to be in the same key as the one the band plays.
So in this case, Bb4, 466.16Hz and D5, 587.33Hz, should work.
Given that you probably won't be part of an air-horn symphony, I believe you can shoot for any 2 notes that are a major third apart.

The perk is that the rhythm and interval are what is recognizable. The notes themselves shouldn't matter that much.
