For Clemson to be considered a “final four” team

Nov 15, 2022, 1:32 PM

They are going to have to do more than just win.
They need to win In a convincing fashion against these next three opponents.
Beating Miami by six points with the first line players in the game in the fourth quarter will not impress the board.

It’s time to play big boy football and if that means making a few changes in the lineup….. Do It!

I think the fans have done their part this year. I’ve been to every home game and the atmosphere has been like the Clemson’s of old!
Let’s get serious about the game coach,

Also, watch how many style points TN lays on SC this week. That will be the bar we have to shoot for the following week...

one loss conference champion. The committee has repeatedly taken conference champions over non-champions with the same records. The talking heads all know this but they can't say it out loud because they are paid to make noise and get clicks. Look at the history of the CFP, conference championships count. Going to 12 teams will totally change the dynamic but championships will still count for byes.

Not if a conference champion from a weaker conference is considered weaker than a non-conference championship participant who is ranked higher. Case in point, compare our ranking to TN and the committee already knows TN won't be playing in a conference championship. It isn't hurting them at all because the committee still believes TN is one of the four best teams in the country.

It is also why they still have (2) 2-loss SEC teams ahead of us. Lack of respect for our conference strength really hurts us in the ranking and that is why the ND loss hurt us so much.

BTW, I know TN is currently ranked #5 but I am assuming they don't lose to SC or Vandy and they will move up after OSU-MI play each other...

The committee does not make assumptions. They hold the conference championship until someone actually wins one. The reason we have seen non-conference champions previously is because the champions had two or more losses and the reason Baylor and TCU didn't get in is because they didn't win an extra game and the conference wouldn't declare either one the champion.

What they actually do is rank who they believe are the 4 best teams in the country after the conference championships have been played. If they still think TN is better than the team who wins the ACC Championship then they are going to stick with TN for the playoffs. It is like the old days when the polls put the 2 best teams ranked #1 and #2 in the National Championship game. The committee has replaced the polls but they are still doing exactly the same thing and they focus more on their ranking than they do conference championships. In the old days, you could have an NC game between 2 teams from the same conference.

If they think the SEC is the strongest conference and they have several teams in the mix then the SEC has a good chance of having 2 teams in the playoffs because they happen to be 2 of the best teams in the nation. With the last ranking, they had 4 SEC teams in the Top 8 so that tells you what they think of those SEC teams. TN is considered one of the best and I really think they will have to lose in order to be kept out. TN is also the team with the most bets in Vegas right now to win the National Championship so guys who analyze teams and bet for a living sure seem to think TN is going to be there. I know that is anecdotal but it does show how well-positioned they are to grab a spot without playing in a conference championship.

Well funny thing is the only time 2 teams from one confrence made it was 2017 Georgia and Alabama.
So I think the record shows they favor confrence champs

The thing is a one-loss conference champion will not have the same record as a one-loss team that didn't play in their conference's championship. The ACC championship game is December 3. The final CFP ranking is December 4. When the last ranking is done, Clemson will be 12-1 and TN will be 11-1. Clemson will have more wins than TN. This is why the CFP committee favors conference champions.

A lot will depend on how much Clemson moves up in the ranking before the ACC Championship game. If TN is still sitting at 4 and we are at 6 or 7, beating UNC probably won't cause the committee to move us up that much. We'll see how it plays out.

The POC says they are not concerned with margin of victory.

Nov 15, 2022, 2:18 PM

While I believe that is their intend I am satisfied that they respect that a team grows during the season and one which looks like a PO team late in the season after a previous stumble is more respected that one which fails late in the season.

Unfortunately, I do not think our loss came early enough to satisfy that condition.

Respectfully, I don't think I would agree that we have gotten stronger over time. We were playing our best when we played NCS and I think we have regressed some since then.

Re: For Clemson to be considered a “final four” team

Nov 15, 2022, 3:33 PM

Absolutely agree, but don’t look for Dabo to run up the score (if he even can) in these next three games. One, that is just not Dabo’s nature. Also, that would require them to get more aggressive in their play calls and take more chances with DJ in the third and fourth quarters with the lead. This would make some of the past game conservative runs in passing situations and plays where we have thrown it short of the first down marker on third down seem now look even more ridiculous than they did at the time in our past games. Also Dabo has made it a point, innumerable times this year, to say that winning a National Championship is not a goal at Clemson. Running up the score, and trying to outperform a team who plays a common opponent, both an indicator that how you win matters, might appear as though winning a NC is a goal at Clemson. Personally, I hope we blow out our next three opponents, and the Committee has no choice but to select Clemson.

It might be worth noting...

Nov 15, 2022, 3:35 PM

That UGA isn't going to lose.
That TCU isn't going to lose.
That either OSU or UM isn't going to lose after playing each other.

That leaves :

1-loss TN
1-loss UM or OSU
1-loss USC

...in front of Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: It might be worth noting...

Nov 15, 2022, 4:23 PM

TCU is the one with the toughest road and biggest risk and with that defense, they are vulnerable, even with a great offense. But if they win out they certainly will have earned it.

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think TCU could lose, but if it's in their championship

Nov 15, 2022, 6:46 PM [ in reply to It might be worth noting... ]

game, they will have already beaten that team, so there's no guarantee we would finish above even a one loss TCU.

I also think there's a good chance USC will lose to UCLA, Notre Dame or in their CCG.

And what if Mich wins a close one over Oh ST? It's doubtful we would jump ahead of Oh St! Virtually no chance, in fact!

So even if TCU and USC lose, the committee could easily go with two SEC teams and two B 10 teams! Tennessee is in a good spot, because they won't lose a game, and one team currently above them is guaranteed to lose!

Will be a very good team. Not necessarily a top four team however.

Clemson better improve a LOT before the game in Charlotte. A LOT.
