The Hill rug

Nov 8, 2014, 11:14 PM

Does anyone know why the Hill rug was blue and orange in the 80's and 90's?

Clemson's secondary color was Navy Blue

Nov 8, 2014, 11:16 PM

at the time. I still have some shirts somewhere. Either way, it wasn't until in the 90s that purple became the secondary color.

purple was tough to find back then. blue and orange was

I don't think that's true

Now we ACTED like it was our secondary color for a while there (with the navy blue-ish basketball uniforms), but I don't believe it was ever officially a school color.

Everything I have researched said the school colors have been orange and purple since the early part of the 20 the century. The very first colors were red and blue I believe.

I just don't know why we ever used a non official color.

produce?? who knows.

I think Orange and Navy is a bit classier. But Orange with Purple is more unique.

Our color was purple. We just used Navy instead.***

To be exact..it's called Northwest Blue (purplish) but HC Neely & Howard..

Nov 8, 2014, 11:28 PM

Went to regular blue since purple faded so badly & budget wasn't there to replace often.

We used famous "Sugar Blues" in Sugar Bowl around 1957 or '58..and thye were true dark blue.

Clemson Orange.

I guess we wanted to make it more exact than Burnt Orange and Northwestern Purple.

I think Northwesten University had trademarked or traderessed northwestern purple. I understand that if we continued to use that color, they could collect royalties on it. Clemson has now trademarked/tradedressed regailia. They can trademark it due to the colors used to create the color from the RGB color palet. I think we have done that also with Clemson Orange.

Purple was the secondary color. The question is why was blue used on the hill rug?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wow

Nov 8, 2014, 11:25 PM [ in reply to Clemson's secondary color was Navy Blue ]

When I was a kid in the 80s, I honestly thought it was our secondary color. Everyone wore it over purple, to my recollection.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're correct. But Northwestern Purple and Burnt Orange

were our original (pretty much) colors.

Re: The Hill rug

The first hill rug was a donation from an upstate textile organization.
It was not meant to be the exact school color, purple. Probably had on hand the
dyestuff to get the navy blue, which seems to be a favorite of many fans anyway.

If I see grey, black, or Navy when it gets cold, I'm making fun of your non-commitment.

I agree. The worst ... wearing your black coats to the CU/scar game in Death Valley. I hate seeing all that black in the stands. This is especially an issue for our female fans. Put a damm orange shirt on over your coat.

Nov 9, 2014, 9:06 AM

Clemson in the late 60's, we used navy blue, primarily due to the scarcity of purple.

The three years I was on the cheerleading squad, the men wore white trousers with a navy blue stripe on the outer seams, navy blue shirts with orange Clemson letters on the backs. The ladies wore navy blue accented with white and orange. The teams wore a lot of white with navy or orange accents.

Although not necessarily a reason, most men at Clemson, alumni and fans would have been loath in those days to be caught wearing purple. lol
