Question from a new tiger fan
Aug 29, 2012, 9:44 AM
|
|
I have a question. I am a recent Clemson fan as I started grad school here 3 years ago. I was watching a foxsports classic game yesterday (Arkansas/Alabama) and noticed Danny Ford was the coach.
Can someone please explain to me why he left Clemson in the first place? He won a national championship with Clemson. Whey did we lose him?
Thanks

Ford went to Arkansas to replace Jack Crowe who lost to The Citadel in the 1992 season opener and was fired the next morning. Joe Kines served as the interim HC for the remainder of the season and Ford took over in 1993.
Ironically, Crowe is HC at Jacksonville St (D1-AA) and finally revenged that loss by beating Mississippi at home in 2011.

Long story but....

the condensed version is that he was essentially forced to resign by the President of the University at the time, Max Lennon, over an ongoing dispute concerning the construction of a football only dormatory among other things including alleged NCAA rules violations.

Danny Ford = Douglas MacArthur/George Patton

Danny wasn't into politics or trying to be a politician. He just wanted to win, win every time, and win big, and tried to provide his people with what it took to accomplish that goal.
And also just like those men, he thought the righteousness of his mission and his popularity with those that also wanted victory would trump the fact he wasn't the "commander-in-chief."
It's a #### shame things couldn't have worked out differently.
Instead, America entered a long, costly, and wasteful 'cold war' with Kommunism; and Clemson entered a long, costly, and wasteful--and quite painful I might add--dark age of under-achievement in football.
Let's hope Dabo can once and for all "heal our land."
