This pains me to say, but watching the 2017 highlights of the offense with KB2 as the starter, he and the other skill players were light years ahead of what I’ve seen from 21-23. He was pretty dang good aside from the game where Bama just smothered the offense and had the bad turnovers.
Cain, McCloud, Renfrow, Overton etc along with Bryant were way better than I remember. Renfrow was Renfrow, and Cain could blow by people deep. Bryant threw a good deep ball. We have nothing close to that now.
That 2017 team would steam roll their way to a title this season where no one is elite like years past.
I know this is a random post, I fell into a Clemson YouTube rabbit hole this morning and was just struck by how much better we were with even KB2.
Georgia better enjoy it while it lasts. They are having their time in the limelight right now. It can be gone in the blink of an eye like we’ve seen.

and we should recognize he had Tigers ranked #1 that year and I believe even going into Semi-Natty game with Bama and they forced him to throw.
Starting the 2nd half he had a shot into end zone which would have put us in the lead but he hesitated his throw and Dabo lit into him on sidelines afterwards and then he was not worth a toot thereafter throwing 1 or 2 picks (ine at our goal line or it was deflected and run in for quick 6).
He may have been a bit right the next year at Spring ball in saying he was finished being the starter due to TL’s better throwing ability and he choked too.
Still, Kelly took us flying to the top that year and even played hurt in that ?Pitt game where he got knocked out.
ReWatched some of his long throws that year and they were great and boy could he run .

Wasn’t bad at all. He wasn’t Watson or TL, but he completed a good amount of nice deep throws. Obviously having the weapons he did helped. Those WRs getting open and getting separation made it easy.

..But I have no doubt what you're saying is true. People gave KB such a hard time too, I remember. Seems like Cade gets more of a pass for some reason - maybe because he's still young.

People gave Bryant a hard time after he quit the team. That's the reason you don't remember.

Ya just have to realize what a difference a great player can make. That 2017 team was good. However, the following year, after game 4 when TL16 took over, it became, what some consider the greatest team of all time. You are correct, KB2 was a fine player and a good young man who should do well in life. However, Trevor was greatness personified and it came through loud and clear.

Kelly, slapped the juice box out of Dabo's hand?
Big Nick Schuessler beat KB2 out in 2016 as back up to DW4.

That’s why bama crushed us in 2017. Kelly B’s strength was his mobility, but often it seemed like he waited too long to run. He was a decent QB but obviously not in the same league as DW4 and TL16. Lawrence was the best QB at Clemson the second he stepped on campus, and EVERYONE knew it. Kelly B handled that reality in a very selfish manner, and for me that was enough to be done with him. No respect for Kelly B.

I was just talking about the offense in 2017 with him as starter before he got beat out. What seemed at the time to be pretty mediocre offense, is vastly superior to what we’ve seen the last 3 years. I didn’t realize the drop off was that bad.
I wasn’t a fan of how he handled things in 2018 either.

No, it was no vastly superior.
2017 - 430ypg, 33.3ppg 2021 - 359ypg, 26.3ppg 2022 - 410ypg, 33.2 ppg 2023 - 437ypg, 32.2ppg
The only significant difference is 2021.
By comparison, the worst season in the Watson/Lawrence era was
2016- 504ypg, 39.2ppg

I realize the reasons are more complex than meets the eye, but it's a bad look for our coach to be making divisive comments about real Clemson fans who are merely observing the obvious and expressing disappointment. It smacks of desperation. Instead of making divisive comments about a loyal fanbase that has beoome accustomed having a football program that's competitive at the highest level, he needs to acknowledge the regression and express his commitment to returning Clemson to the place where "Best really IS the standard." Don't knife the fanbase; reassure them. If he can't honestly do that, we have bigger problems.

He'd be the starting QB on this team and would have won us a national championship 2 years ago when UGA lucked into a championship because every other team was down.
KB was good enough to get us to the playoffs.
He just wasn't Watson or Lawrence.

Highlight reels do just that. Highlight the good, very rarely the bad. KB was horrible at critical thinking for a qb. Watching and remembering those big game moments "LIVE":
Kelly Bryant was terribly inaccurate with the ball. Why do you think against better competition our offense was shutdown. Stop the run and watch KB squirm.
His instinct was run first instead of hand off to his much more capable rb Etienne!
When we needed a first down on 3rd or 4th down dude would slide well short instead of using his big ### frame to plow for that extra yard. Hell sometimes it was that extra few inches we needed.
But you enjoy them highlights whilst I remember the whole game.
