? About Baseball Recruiting

Jul 7, 2015, 6:31 PM

I have not kept up with baseball recruiting the last few years. Recently, I have seen the headlines of several instate players committing to Clemson. For those of you that follow baseball closely, have the Tigers always had success with instate guys prior to Coach Monte Lee getting the job or is this something new?

Taking quotes from the last commit

Lee watched him every single time he pitched last year. That's a lot. Seems like Lee is an active in state recruiter. Mix that with Lecroy and you have a nasty 1-2 punch.

There has been times in the past where not too many S.C. players were targeted. Thus, part of the problem.

Whats funny is that the players in MLB and AAA for us and USC as of the 2008 to present teams are mostly not from South Carolina. People need to realize that this state isn't the hot bed of baseball players that they think it is. Our recruitment of the Atlanta area is the hotbed. People also want to forget that Coastal Carolina has been on the rise and mostly recruit Nationally too and not so much in South Carolina.

Another interesting comment from earlier was that Monte saw a kid every time he pitched. I also was told that head coaches in any sport only get so many evaluations and contacts with an athlete. An evaluation is anytime they are in the stands no matter if watching another kid. Hench why your head football coach only goes on recruiting trail when they need to try and land the recruit. It would be interesting to know if baseball is different than other sports or if this has changed. I knew a college baseball coach who couldn't go to his son's high school games (one reason being scheduling and conflicts with own practices/games) but the other reason was because he couldn't talk to any of the players who were friends of son at game (which would be contact with a prospective recruit)or take pictures with them (violation - if didn't have a relationship with athlete prior to 8th grade).

That was mainly a problem when Reginos was here

after he went to Winthrop and was replaced by LeCroy, we started rebuilding some of those local bridged Riginos had burnt.
