The earliest any one mentioned was around 1968. They actually came to Clemson in the fall of 1960. I was in one of his first classes as I had him at 9 am MWF. May have been his first class as I don't think there was an 8 am Chem 101

Sounds like professors you might find are Notre Dame.

I had Mrs. Bishop for Chemistry in the fall semester of 1976. She was tough.

I managed a "B" in the class but most of the class had a failing grade. In talking with fellow students, most had test scores below 50 and a similar semester average.

From what I understand, both were GPA nightmares.

I had Dr Bishop in 1969 for Chemistry 101. We also had our final exam from 8am to 12 on a Saturday! He brought his 4 year old daughter to the exam who distracted us all. I also had a Chemistry lab that year conducted by some guy named Ibrahim I. Ibrahim (yes that one) who was trying to start a club sport at that time. I believe it was Soccer.

I had Pa in 1984 and Ma in 1985. At that time, all chemistry students, regardless of who their prof was, took tests at night. I seem to remember them at 6:00 PM. You would see everyone walking toward Brackett Hall like a death march.

If I remember correctly, I had Pa for the first semester chemistry (fall of 84) and Ma for the second (Spring 85). I don't remember the course numbers. The actual classes were in the Bracket auditorium -- probably 100-150 students in each class. This was before Brackett was torn down/renovated and made into the the Political Science/Sociology/etc/etc building.

I had him in 87 and 88 for Chem 110 and 112, I think, but it was a long time ago. IIRC those were the general chemistry classes for science/engineering majors?

All I remember is him talking randomly and never really trying to teach chemistry. I never had any idea of what would possibly be on the exams. The exams were the same for everyone no matter which prof.

I remember the first exam…I don’t think anything he discussed was on the test. It was like the other chem profs had written the exam but didn’t tell him what was on it. I learned right then that if I was going to pass I had to learn on my own.

Horrible experience. Almost left Clemson because of it.

My very first college class was with Ma Bishop. Eight am on Monday, 1974. She walks into the classroom, turns her back to the class and writes an equation on the board. She then turns around to face us. Her first words to us were, “If there is anyone in this class who does not know what this equation means, then you have no business in this class.”

I thought she was joking, but a few weeks later I realized she was telling the truth as I had no idea what that equation meant. That was my introduction to Clemson academics.

I had Pa for Chemistry 101 in the fall of 1982. Eked out a B.

First day of class, he told us "Congratulations. You have the best chemistry teacher at Clemson and will learn more than any other class." I wonder what Ma would have thought hearing that.

I also remember him saying that final exam time was his favorite as a student, because he already knew everything and could go to the movies and relax and didn't have to study.

I was lucky. I dodged them both. Had Dr. Polk, and foxy Knoxy. We all remember him right? Hated the 3-6 pm lab on Mondays.

Had Pa Bishop for Chemistry 101 in the Fall of 1973. Just out of High School, the class was in the auditorium of Brackett Hall, this was my first experience with a large class. Believe I got a C. That Semester also had Ma Dunkle for Caculus, have more bad memories of her class than Pa Bishop.

When did they retire? I had Dr Spain in the fall of 86, and forget other guy for Chem 102 (Allen maybe)in the Spring of 87. Which was first year in new Chem building.

Looks like Ma died in 2018. The below article may say when the retired.

…falling asleep in Pa Bishop’s Chem 101 class in old Brackett auditorium in the fall of 75. He continued to lecture while slowly walking up to me, and then whacked my desk top with a meter stick! Never went to sleep in there again.
