Nike

So not only is Phil Knight using his company to pay players to sign with Oregon he’s using every aspect of his publicly traded company to entice recruits. From NIL payments, internships, job offers, to even custom made Jordans designed by recruits and their relatives. There are no rules so the NCAA can’t and won’t do anything about, but I wish the other schools wouldn’t take it laying down. Clemson, Bama, Jawa, 0310 state, LSU. Meechigan….are all Nike outfitted schools. Screw that if you’re gonna use your company’s resources to favor our opponent then you too are our opponent. You may not be breaking the rules but we don’t have to subsidize your actions. Probably wishful thinking but I’d like to see the big schools do something to impact Nike. I used to like to buy official Nike sideline gear, but I won’t be buying Nike branded Clemson gear going forward; he77 they might as well put an “O” on the shirt right next to the paw.

He’s not just using his personal wealth

He’s using the resources of a company of which he’s not the sole or even majority owner; reportedly he owns 17% of Nike’s outstanding shares. Most of the major players in CFB are its customers and as a result are subsidizing its actions. He can do whatever the heck he wants; I would just like for the rest of the teams to find someone else to partner with.

Like Under Armour??

I'm sure they are doing all they can to help Maryland.

How about New Balance?

NB isn't going to get anyone excited, but I'm sure the folks at BC are thinking of creative ways to do something similar.

Adidas, has bigger issues and are not as connected as Nike, UA or NB are to certain schools. MY guess is they probably have been approached by their major schools (Kansas, Louisville, Miami, Texas A&M) about opportunities.

Sadly, I don't think there is much that can be done. Further, I'm not sure how much Phil Knight is involved with these types of decisions.

Clemson needs to continue lean into what they built with Paw Journey and grow surrounding business, it's Alumni, it's football alumni, and be creative (like Paw Journey).

The more I look at NIL, the more I appreciate what we've done and continue to do. It's the only thing that makes us different and stand out. Hopefully we'll grow it and the landscape changes some back to a more even playing field. B/c right now, we're not getting elite WR's and RB's and I'm fearful it has to do with NIL.

Knight is intimately involved

Thanks for sharing that article.

Jan 11, 2023, 6:13 PM [ in reply to Like Under Armour?? ]

It'll be interesting to see how much money is actually funneled through Division Street, Inc.

Knowing Nike though, they have very high expectations for any athletes that sign onto this NIL deal. I know many athletes who had deals with them and the expectation level is super high. To the point it turned many off and they looked elsewhere.

My original point stands. There isn't any other company to go to currently that can provide as much as what Nike does through (Gear, cash & % of Licensed Merchandise sales).

Re: Does Nike provide their gear gratis to Clemson?

Jan 11, 2023, 7:47 PM [ in reply to Like Under Armour?? ]

I’m assuming that Nike provides all of their gear free-of-charge to Clemson.

Clemson’s excellent brand name gives excellent notoriety to Nike.

Assuming that Nike indeed provides their stuff gratis to us, I could see why N8ke would willingly do this.

As for the ESPN TV contact with the ACC, it is possible that Nike is a big enough advertiser with ESPN / ACC Network that all ACC scrolls are required to use (and maybe purchase) Nike gear.

In summary, there are various potential reasons why many or all ACC schools use Nike stuff.

Xxxxxxxxx

I wish Nike would just disappear.

Athletic Departments and coaches do not bite the hand that feeds them and if the school is a Nike school, they are fed.

30% of CFB schools are with Adidas, 15% UA

There's more than one trough from which you can feed. If Nike was unable to sell licensed college apparel it would send a message.

Everyone knew this would eventually happen once NIL came along. There will have to be some regulation at some point. Why not just tell every 5 star recruit we will give you a briefcase with $1 million dollars? Is that even illegal?

Re: Nike

Jan 11, 2023, 7:55 PM

Lol. This isn't how any of this works. Nike PAYS the schools that use Nike gear. It's an endorsement deal from Nike. Clemson isn't paying them for anything. Nike pays at least $2M a year to schools like Colorado. I bet Clemson is getting >$2M.

Phil Knight is free to use his money how he sees fit. Just like Ruiz in Miami who took Radakovich and Nathaniel Joseph.

If Clemson fans don't like it, then open your wallet and donate to Clemons NIL Collective, Tiger Impact. All this complaining about how unfair NIL is, when i guarantee most of the people complaining aren't donating to Clemson's NIL collective.

Re: Nike

Jan 11, 2023, 9:11 PM

$400K is what they give us in cash annually, 10s of millions is what they make selling officially licensed Clemson products; that’s what I mean by subsidizing their enterprises. We don’t allow UA to license our products because they sponsor that trash school in Columbia; we should do the same with Nike if they’re gonna actively hurt our recruiting efforts.
