My interest and passion for college football is

Jan 2, 2023, 4:54 PM

waning quickly. Never thought that would happen. Watched only one full bowl game this year(Clemson of course). Call me old I guess, but this new environment grows less appealing each passing day.

100%! The playoff games, USC/Tulane and even Wyoming/Ohio were great games!

I can understand where OP is coming from but there were quite a few really good games this bowl season.

A lot of great finishes at least.***

I agree. I watched Clemson games. Had the Michigan TCU game on in the background while I was organizing my laundry utility room. Tuned in to the end of the UGA OSU game.

That is really all I watched this year with the bowls. This coming from someone who absolutely used to love college ball. That Labor Day Saturday was like Christmas to me. My wife definitely loves the fact that I have tuned out quite a bit.

I watched a lot of the bowl games and some were amazing.! I do agree my interest has went down really since covid. NIL, Portal have made college free agency. Then Clemson football is steadily declining I totally can see with the OP is coming from.

Both of the playoff games were great this year.
I know the bowl games aren’t really that important anymore but I’m happy they’re still on because it gives me a chance to watch college football for longer before the drought from January until the season starts again in September. I really miss it when it’s over every year.

The product on the field is still pretty great

You can't really tell the effects if NIL and transfer portal when you are watching the actual action.

I have completely stopped paying attention to recruiting or transfer portal rumor stuff because the off-field part of is has become too much. I have found it more enjoyable to just tune that out and watch the games.

I love college football during the year but I am not one of those people who pines for it in the off season. I follow plenty of other sports in that time so maybe that helps as I don't get tired of the off season drama stuff.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think that is the line being drawn in fandom.

Jan 3, 2023, 12:24 PM

those who have historically craved it year round versus those that really enjoy watching the games without the backstage rumor mill nuances of recruiting, transfers, hiring/firing etc. As a fan who used to be the latter I began to not enjoy it as much, but this year I put those other things in the back burner and just watched a few games and enjoyed that aspect. I guess it is driving me to be a more casual fan for my own benefit in enjoying the sport.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that is fair. I was never a huge recruiting guy

Jan 3, 2023, 1:08 PM

to begin with. I know some really enjoy that stuff

Same here. Even though I still follow it, it’s not the same. I’m over losses almost as soon as the clock expires. NIL and portal have turned it into something else. Glad we had our little run when it was still somewhat in control.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Same***

Jan 2, 2023, 9:41 PM

Between NIL/portal players and absurd coaches salaries, its becoming harder and harder to support.

Also tired of these ridiculous coaches saying theyre "growing young men" as if the professors getting paid a literal FRACTION of the coaches arent having as much or more of an impact on more kids' lives.

It's one huge sales job and maybe it's time more of us opted-out.

It's out of whack.

My wife and I traveled to every game from 2014-2020 (Covid). It had become a job really. When Covid came and they restricted seating it was almost a relief, so much so that we both decided together to give it a rest. Started to resume this year and after the first few games and watching us sputter we looked at each other and said it was fun but time to let others have those seats. I’m afraid the new generations will never know what college football used to be about and how truly awesome it was before they ruined it

just not the same?***

Same

Jan 3, 2023, 12:12 PM

Something just seems off. I'm finding that I would rather do something else than watch games. I'll continue to watch Clemson, but that's about all I watched all year.

I get the OPs reasoning but you just have to get over the fantasy that players are anything other than paid mercenaries and that they will go to whoever pays the most. The concept of players going to a school because of academics, love of the school, or dare I say, culture, is hopelessly antiquated.
