I would be very surprised if the president had that authority. That would not be smart and obviously very dangerous.

He actually does, on most things. The exceptions are listed in the articles and posts below.

it the last day or two, and here's my take.
The president does have almost total power to singlehandedly declassify almost anything. Certain things, like nuclear secrets or names of spies that could put national security at risk can not be declassified. He can't declassify with the wave of a magic wand, however, there is a process in place.

Very much my own take.
Also, Trump lies. Like, a lot. Just because he said he declassified stuff doesn't necessarily mean he actually did. And his security clearances got yanked the second he walked out the door - unlike prior presidents - because there is extreme mistrust of him by the intelligence services and State department. So anything he was holding that he hadn't officially declassified through those channels you mentioned, he was holding illegally.
The other thing is, the way the espionage act is worded, it doesn't matter if stuff was classified or not. If what he exposed could put America's defense at risk, "classified" or "non-classified" simply doesn't matter so he's not off the hook anyhow.
And none of the TS/SCI stuff is allowed to be out of a skiff anyhow because all that qualifies as such. If he took it, it was illegal. Period.
He's in dire trouble, from what I understand, and that "I declassified it" argument isn't going to help him. It'll help him even less if he lied or defied a subpoena.

Prediction® is that Trump pleads out with no trial and a fine, to a charge that means he can never hold office again -- giving him a golden bridge and a fundraising tool that is probably his preferred out from running again anyways. We all win.

A) Yes. The Dept of Energy has to agree to declassify nuclear for example.
B) According to this week's search warrant, it doesn't matter. 1924 wasn't on the warrant which is the statute for possession of classified material.

Out of curiosity, what’s it like being wrong so much?

It honestly doesn’t sound like that much fun, except that you have a pretty impressive ability to simply ignore evidence that proves you’re wrong.

My follow up question is this:

|
Even if he was able to declassify those documents, does it automatically give him the right to take them to his house and keep them there?

Well obviously he declassified the documents that the Feds planted there. This is some real 6 dimension chess he is playing.
