My baby boy has made two cuts at Columbia University.

They've said that 70% of those who make it this far will be admitted.
You guys know that wasn't even a dream for me during his lifetime but I can't help hoping he will make it. I mean, getting in and Ivy League school is a big deal.
He called me this morning and told me there's no way he'd consider UVA, UK, UTC, UT or Vandy. If he doesn't get a full academic ride to Columbia he's willing to transfer his work to Greenville and wait a semester or two and pay to become a Clemson Tiger.
I don't see anyway to lose on this one.

He's decided Yale (BOOSH FAN) is where he want to do that part.
Dear Lord, I wish I'd set my goals that high when I was his age. AMEN

Your son is about to get into an ivy league school, he then wants to go to Yale Law, and he's a fan of George W. Bush? Which one of your wives did he get his intelligence from?

He know all about Reagan but Ronnie only had a 4 yr degree in economics. Who in his short lifetime to choose from if you take Reagan out? Bill, Daddy Bush or Obama?

Congrats and good luck the rest of the way for him.
I think he should be pretty darn proud to make it that far. Not many people in the world get that far.

Had he studied harder he could have gotten in at Clemson. Just kidding! Good luck to him, and I hope he gets the news he wants. His plan B is a pretty good one, too.

The moron took 19 hours this past spring and got promoted to SGT in his company. He could do some studying on the job but they called him in every time they fired somebody or somebody laid out. He worked an average of 55 hours a week.
I begged him not to overload for fear of him ruining his 3.95 GPR or getting fired for failure to perform his duties at work. The only beat he missed was not taking the ACT until Clemson pitched a fit and refused his application.
Use to be that having 60 plus hours and a GPR that high exempt one from ACT/SAT crap.
Columbia sent him a request to transfer there as a student who'd been out of school for a couple or three years and had returned to finish. They also said they had no applicants from this part of the country that fit that criteria.
Imagine that, a white country boy being preferred?

I'm very proud of your son for the dedication to achievement he has demonstrated and for his follow through on his commitments. While Clemson seems to have gotten pretty demanding now in terms of who gets admitted, I'm glad, because it makes every diploma more valuable to employers, but it surely does provide more hoops to jump through, though. Good luck to him, and again, Congrats on raising a fine young man, and major kudos to him.

because he want to be a politician and make a difference. He and I watched Bill Oreilly every night. That's where he got his political views and Bill was one of the reasons he chose an IVY league grad school for law.
The only thing that can change his mind about anything is a woman. A good one might be able to bring him back to center right, maybe.

He especially struggled with NYC and Columbia thanks to Obama.
Perhaps he can hack the records and find out how much chit Obama pulled during his coke days.

As much as I love Clemson, I would question if that was a smart decision. It wasn't a smart economic decision but if he is following his heart, then maybe it was.

Bengal - I think you are trolling. I have to call BS on that. I can understand going to Harvard and hating it and then wanting to come back home, but to turn down a full ride to the #1 school in the world? That is hard to believe....I'll bet there aren't 5 kids who do that every 10 years.

But if you sort that list you linked by annual return on equity instead of just dollars, you will see that Clemson is ranked higher than Columbia.
Doesn't sound like you can go wrong either way though.

I'm thinking the boy being born and raised a Tiger will make the right choice.
He wants to finish at Yale Law and he's thinking that getting in there might be easier if he does his undergrad work in one of their schools. I can't argue with him about that for I'm ignorant to the situation. I've no idea what it takes to get into an Ivy League lawschool.

1988 - I was being a bit sarcastic. Just pointing out that Clemson actually ranks higher on that list if you sort it by annual ROI instead of pure dollars.

If he was focused on a 4yr degree that would be correct. Clemson to the Ivy for a law degree is, "I don't know."
Honestly, I could push the kid into Clemson if I wanted to. I could bullchit him into Clemson if I bullchitted any of my kids. I could beg him into Clemson. I could negotiated him into Clemson. I can't pay him to do anything cause he does what I ask and won't take money.
I can't influence the kid on a college choice. He's not 18, he's 26. Somethings a parent shouldn't give advice on. Personally, I've raised him a Tiger. If he believes his best path through life is an undergrad degree from an Ivy school how can I argue with that.
I can't believe a Clemson grad wouldn't appreciate and respect an Ivy education.

Update on the boy.

Phil got an E-mail sometime over the last two weeks from Penn U. His previous school's email was down during that time so he didn't find it until today. Penn wants to see him on campus.
UVa changed their minds about him being on the waiting list and have made contact with him too. I'm holding out for a Clemson offer but I haven't said that to the boy. I sell my old decrepit butt to see him become a full fledged Tiger.

What is wrong with UVA and Vandy? Two fine academic institutions. Classmates at those schools would probably be more enjoyable to be around as well than Columbia. No disrespect to Columbia kids and I am probably wrong but those people up there are just a little different than us down here.
Congrats on his grades. I hope he gets in to the school of his choice. Hard work pays off. I'm sure you are very proud of him
I wish him much success.

Clemson is superior in our minds and I'm wondering if a 25 yr old son who has been a Clemson Fan since birth (I was a Jr when he was born) isn't ready to agree.

I hadn't been this proud since he went 4 for 4 against TL Hanna's ace and ended the season leading the league in stolden bases. That was his sophmore year and the only year he played for Daniel.

Update.

|
|
It was tough not to tell you this. Phil and I talked three times since the invitation to Penn came in. He told me during the first two calls that he'd decided to frame the offers and acceptance letters if he get them, take the fall off and start Clemson next spring.
The last call he added that his Ivy education will cost him only 13K/year and he believed he could cover the rest with grants. Clemson has closed the door on financial aid for the next school year. No academic scholorships are to be had. He'd have to pay for the spring sesson out of pocket. He couldn't say if he'd qualify for scholorships next year or not.
This might turn out to be a money thing. Imagine that, Clemson costing a SC resident more than the Ivy.
