Dumpers, 'splain something to me

Sep 10, 2014, 10:50 AM

So the argument keeps getting bandied about that Dabo values "seniority," and prefers to put players on the field who have "earned it" rather than play the ones who give us the best chance to win.

The way I see it, this argument essentially boils down to the principle that Dabo values "fairness" over winning. This would absurd unless he was coaching a soccer team for five year olds, which is why I'm in the trust the coaches camp. Dabo's sole purpose is to win games and do it without getting us in trouble with the NCAA. The way I see it, if you believe he intentionally avoids accomplishing this goal, you think either: (1) he's a complete fool or (2) doesn't care about his job.

Happy to hear why you think I am wrong. This is a judgment free zone, I can't speak for others but I'll TU any response.

It's entirely possible.....

that Dabo is trying to do both; i.e., put players on the field who have "waited their turn" or who have "earned it" and who give us the best chance to win.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

I think... when you play good players who have paid the price and worked hard to become dependable players and also play the young guys who are talented but have not been in the program long enough to excel you are doing the right thing. Young guys with raw talent are not always completely ready to assume a starting role. Skill will only get you so far. At some point in a players development he must acquire the intangibles to be a star player and that often takes time and experience.
Two cents please!

^^^THIS^^^

Exactly the point I was trying to make in my post below.

BECAUSE Cole is the starter now, DW will be able to learn those "intangibles" at a much safer and faster pace!

If riding the bench helps you gain intangibles and helps you become a star, cole should be A pro bowler by now. The only person to hold Jordan to under 30? Dean Smith. Dabo isn't the first coach to hold someone back and I understand the mentality to a degree but dang, 15 yards in second half against Uga. I at least want to go down swinging. To be honest with DW outplaying cs so far this season it's no longer a qb controversy. It's a coaching controversy. You know that chad Morris wants DW taking every snap but dabo doesn't. Morris is so visibly frustrated by it but he can't say it. DW has a qb rating over 300. Cole is less than 100. I can't recall the exacts but Walt was reading them the other day. Dabo indicated DW may not be going heavy at practice. So what. Some players are gamers. Allen Iverson was one of the most feared players of his time and he openly mocked practice. In a perfect world I'd love for all seniors to be honored with playing time and only those who give it all should play. But we aren't at vandy. We want to win big on the big stage and that means recruiting the very best and putting them on the field. But I agree with other posters on this point too, dabo is the only person on staff that we can't afford to fire due to buyout and he know he is safe this year no matter what. Team gets beat by 20 again and the players may start wondering why their most explosive player is sitting the bench. DW has every possibility to be just as good as spiller or Watkins. Game changer. Honestly we need that.

"we are going to play the best players we have" ? Thats why Sammy started as a true freshman , why does Scott have to ride the bench behind Humphries?

Tay's talented...but I'm not sure he's close to Sammy...***

suggest that some of you do the same) and don't always understand the decisions that are made but I do put my trust in Dabo and Co. to do what is best. Now, I don't always agree with said decisions but it is not MY job and so far Dabo and Co. have been pretty good at THEIR job so I'm going to believe that they must be better at it than me and possibly...just possibly know something that I don't.

I buy the best chance to win arguement.

Sep 10, 2014, 11:25 AM

Granted I'm an economist and think way too analytically, but I view the seniority concept in terms of certainty and risk aversion. The veteran guys are known quantities, sure they may not have the upside but they also don't risk a catastrophic mistake. Playing a very good Georgia team in Athens isn't the place to find out how a player is going to perform when it counts. I really believe the coaching staff has used the first three+ weeks to figure some of this stuff out, and if they really aren't playing the best players then I'll flip and start criticizing. For the record, I'm team Gallman and Scott and I hope they get the majority of reps at their respective positions in a week and half.

QB is a whole 'nother thing that I prefer not to speculate on.

I think Dabo has too much to lose (money) to not play the best players. He plays who he thinks has the best chance to win.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

32 wins in three years (top 8 in USA)...

Sep 10, 2014, 10:50 PM

Can you imagine if he played the best players instead of the ones he thinks should be playing? Man, we'd have 3 national championships in a row to show for it!!

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.
