question. “Why do most players wear dark paint-like substance on their faces?” What brought this to mind was watching Cade’s interview. Back in the late 1950’s we would put automobile grease below our eyes to help deflect the sun if it was bright day. That was the sole reason to wear “face paint.” Nowadays it doesn’t matter if they are playing in a dome or at night, they still apply it. You might have an answer that will show my ignorance but I would appreciate hearing it.

Supposedly it blocks out glare from lights or the sun.

On an episode of MythBusters, Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman tested whether eye black reduces glare. They determined that, while eye black does not eliminate glare, it does improve an athlete's ability to differentiate between light and dark, enhancing a player's ability to track moving objects in a sunny environment.
